Today we’d like to introduce you to Richie Salazar.
Hi Richie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into bartending wasn’t necessarily something I had planned, but looking back, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I started working in the culinary industry at 18 as a prep cook, eventually working my way up to line cook & then sous chef. Cooking was where I first discovered my passion for creativity, experimenting with flavors, and creating experiences through food. Unfortunately, during COVID, the restaurant I was working at closed, forcing me to find a new direction.
That unexpected change led me to the front of house, where I began working as a server. It was there that I developed a deeper appreciation for hospitality and the connections you can create with people. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to step behind the bar, and that’s when everything started to come together. Bartending allowed me to combine my culinary background with my newfound love for hospitality, and what initially started as another job quickly became something I genuinely fell in love with.
As my passion grew, I decided to take a chance on myself and start my own mobile bartending business. I wanted to create something of my own that reflected my creativity, attention to detail, and passion for providing memorable experiences.
Today, I’m fortunate enough to be working at Kuduowl, surrounded by incredibly talented individuals who continue to inspire and challenge me. I’ve had opportunities to develop my own cocktails, explore advanced techniques, and participate in cocktail competitions that have pushed me beyond my comfort zone.
At 24, I’m still very much a student of the craft. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, especially knowing that none of this was part of my original plan. What started as an unexpected career change has turned into something I’m genuinely passionate about. I’m excited to continue learning, growing, and seeing just how far I can take it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I believe the challenges have been just as important as the successes. One of my biggest obstacles was having to start over during COVID after spending years working my way up in the kitchen. Transitioning into the front of house meant stepping outside my comfort zone, and learning how to connect with people in a way I never had before.
Starting my own business came with its own challenges, especially learning to balance creativity with the responsibilities of entrepreneurship. I’ve also had to learn not to compare my progress to others and to trust my own journey.
Ultimately, every setback has taught me to be more adaptable, patient, and resilient. I’ve learned that growth isn’t always linear, and sometimes the opportunities that change your life come from the challenges you never expected.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m currently a bartender at Kuduowl, where I specialize in craft cocktails, creative flavor combinations, and incorporating culinary techniques into bartending. My background as a chef has heavily influenced my approach to bartending, allowing me to experiment with ingredients, textures, and presentations in ways that go beyond traditional cocktails. I take pride in constantly challenging myself, whether that’s developing original cocktails, exploring new techniques, or participating in competitions. What I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come in a relatively short amount of time, turning something I discovered unexpectedly into a genuine passion and career. I believe what sets me apart is my willingness to keep learning, take creative risks, and approach every cocktail with the mindset of both a chef and a bartender. For me, it’s never been just about making a good drink, but creating an experience that people will remember.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck. As a Christian, I believe that everything happens according to God’s will and in His timing. Whether something turns out good or bad, I trust that there’s a greater purpose behind it, even when I may not understand it at the moment. Looking back at my journey, some of the things I once considered setbacks ended up leading me toward opportunities I never expected. I’ve learned to embrace both the blessings and the challenges, knowing that what’s meant for me will find its way to me, and what’s not simply wasn’t part of His plan for me. I believe my responsibility is to continue working hard, remain faithful, and trust God with the outcome.
