Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Rice.
Rebecca, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
While everyone was packing their bags getting ready to leave for college, I was surfing Craigslist trying to find the cheapest room to rent and crossing my fingers the repo truck didn’t find where I parked my car last night. To make a long story short, I was a wreck in the early years of adulthood. It was such a humbling experience to watch as everyone I knew exchanged their lettermen jackets and cheer bows for keys their dorms and college bumper stickers. Why didn’t I follow suite? The prideful part of me wants to say I never wanted to go to college because I’m a student of life and not an institution, but since we’re friends I’ll let you in a little secret; I was too scared. I was raised by a single father, and there was no college fund or savings account waiting for me on the other side of the graduation stage. If I went to college, I’d have to pay for it myself, and because I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, I figured the smart decision was to just wait it out until I was sure of what I wanted to do and wasn’t scared anymore. Fast forward a couple months, and a few terrible financial decisions later, I found myself in the exact predicament I was trying to avoid; broke, in debt, and working a dead-end retail job.
Now, I don’t want to mislead you into thinking that I was a complete slacker during this time; I was the youngest person to ever be promoted to assistant manager in a certain retail chain I worked for, I interned as a photojournalist for an award-winning newspaper in San Diego, I danced my booty off and made a little magic working for the Disneyland Resort, I interned for a certain Designer in Newport Beach that just so happens to have a dedicated section on the Nordstrom’s sales floor. See! I told you I wasn’t a slacker! I was the exact opposite actually, I was all over the place with these new experiences, but nothing seemed to stick. I thought I was “destined” for one thing, but something better would come along and completely divert my focus and attention. As time passed and the more responsible I became, I did eventually get my act together. So much so that there was even a point where I was finally out of debt, living in a luxury apartment, and paying more than the minimum on the car I just bought. Life was good, and I was coasting. This is what all my friends who checked “yes” on their acceptance letters were working towards, right? On the outside, things were great, but not the inside, things were anything but. I was secure, yes, but I was incredibly unfulfilled. What I THOUGHT were the ideals I was working towards turned out to just be an empty pot at the end of the rainbow; disappointing.
After some serious deep-shower-thoughts, I realized that although my mind and passions constantly changed over the years, the only constant I could see was how I never ventured too far from having a camera in my hands. For some reason, I was always taking pictures one way or another. I took this thought, and ran with it. I was determined to make this idea stick, and MAKE it work. I started doing everything I could to teach myself how to venture off AUTO and photograph subjects for real. I was reading books on business, listening to podcasts about social media marketing, watching tutorials on all things cameras – I was obsessed. Eventually, I left my office job and took the leap of faith to see what I could make of myself by taking on entry-level positions for a few different media companies. In just a short few years, I left W4’s altogether and opted in for the life of a 1099-er. Today, I officially support myself entirely through my passions, and I couldn’t be more fulfilled.
My journey is unlike most, but my happiness level is also unlike most. I get to wake up every morning and DO the things I daydream about, not just let those thoughts collect on a notebook paper somewhere. I now work with awesome brands and inspiring people, creating content for their social media profiles. I’m incredibly satisfied with what I do, and although it’s stressful having such a roller-coaster-of-a-lifestyle, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Who needs a college bumper sticker anyways, right?
Please tell us about Rebecca Blue Media.
My company provides the production resources for business and influencers who are tired of being a one-man show. There comes a point where the social media strategy, engagement, content creation, branding, etc. becomes too much and you’re faced with the decision to either plateau or invest & grow. I work with the latter of the two. I marry the visuals to the brand by bringing voices and stories to life in a visually cohesive way. I work to lessen your workload giving you more time and mental space to focus on what got you here in the first place. Are you a food blogger who doesn’t have time or stamina to shoot the food from your recipes anymore? I got your back. Are you a small business who is just overwhelmed with everything social media? I got your back. Are you an influencer stressing out because you just landed a huge sponsorship and don’t know how you’re going to be able to deliver? I got your back.
Social Media Consulting. Social Media Management. Social Media Content Creation.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Oh boy, my favorite childhood memory? I have so many! I grew up on a cornfield while living in Wisconsin. I’d say one of my favorite childhood memories was romping through the cornfield with my brothers looking for corn snakes. You just can’t get that kind of adventure here in California!
