Meet Peggy Hoy of Sherman Oaks Antique Mall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peggy Hoy

Hi Peggy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Sherman Oaks Antique Mall began its journey in 1982, founded with a vision to create a space where the community could explore and celebrate the stories embedded in antiques. From the outset, it became a gathering place for families seeking unique treasures and connections to the past. Over the years, the mall flourished as a beloved community landmark, fostering memories for generations.

When the original owners contemplated retirement last year, we faced the difficult reality of potential closure. However, new ownership stepped in with a deep appreciation for the mall’s legacy, revitalizing our space while honoring its history. Today, we are home to over 100 passionate vendors, each contributing to a rich narrative that invites exploration and connection.

At Sherman Oaks Antique Mall, we are dedicated to preserving the spirit of antiquing, ensuring our space continues to be a vibrant celebration of Los Angeles’ culture and heritage. Our journey is a testament to the enduring value of community and storytelling, and we invite everyone to be part of this ongoing adventure.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Sherman Oaks Antique Mall has encountered significant challenges, particularly as our original owners approached retirement. Many, including our vendors, feared that we would close for good. Fortunately, new owners discovered us, eager to honor our legacy and revitalize the space. This unexpected transition allowed us to preserve the mall’s unique character while introducing fresh ideas that resonate with newer generations. Our dedication to the Sherman Oaks Antique Mall is stronger than ever, ensuring it remains a cherished destination for exploration and connection in Los Angeles.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
What truly sets us apart is our family-oriented atmosphere and strong ties to the community. We offer items for all age demographics, collaborating with prop masters and celebrities to showcase memorabilia and share their stories. Our commitment to understanding customer niches allows us to connect people with treasures that resonate with them. Home to over 100 dedicated vendors—many of whom have been with us for over a decade—we take pride in running a business rooted in love for our community.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson we’ve learned along our journey at Sherman Oaks Antique Mall is the power of embracing change. Throughout time and various economic shifts, antiques have not only survived but thrived, continuing to be cherished throughout the 21st century. While this can be a daunting prospect for some, we find it exhilarating.

Each new addition to our shelves maintains that nostalgic charm while relating to the contemporary individual. This blend of the old and new allows us to create connections that resonate with today’s patrons, ensuring that every piece tells a story that is both timeless and relevant. By adapting to changing tastes while honoring our heritage, we celebrate the enduring love for antiques and the unique role they play in our lives today.
