Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Toscano.
Patricia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My mother and sister opened Super Taco in 1993. My former husband and I worked under them, and nine months after opening Super Taco we became the owners. It was hard in the beginning; we would have to stay at our business from open to close. I would deal with the front of house engage with all aspects of customer service, logistics, accounting, and managing our finances. My former husband would be responsible for all aspects of the kitchen from food preparation, making recipes, and being the restaurant’s handyman. For an extended period, it was just us two newly made entrepreneurs running Super Taco. Months after that, we were fortunate enough to begin hiring help in our business. The team would grow just like our restaurant, and that was because of our returning customers and the word of mouth they created.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being the owner of a business gives you the satisfaction of knowing you are your own boss. It is also a big responsibility because you are in charge, and all problems must be resolved by you. Being in the restaurant business, challenges/obstacles are a guarantee to occur. One challenge that all business owners goes through is finding dependable employees, we’ve had some problems in that area, but now we have a low turnover rate. Sadly, in the beginning of 2009, I decided to get a divorce. In that year, the economy was still downward reeling from the Great Recession. Those where hard years in every way, economic, and emotionally. However, now the sole owner of Super Taco I was determined to overcome these challenges. Also, thanks to my family and employees, which never left me and were always there for me, everything worked out.
Please tell us about Super Taco.
We always use the best quality meats and ingredients, making sure our food is delicious but most important is giving excellent customer service. In California, there is no shortage of Mexican food what is going to set a restaurant apart is the service that one gives to a customer. I pride myself in always having a smile and a positive attitude for my customers. In 26 years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many customers, many of these customers have come as children and now come with children of their own. These customers tell me how they remember how their parents brought them as kids and want to continue the tradition with their children. For me, that’s one reason that I feel pride and joy to know that my business is so ingrained into the community. In the next few months, my sister and I are opening a restaurant here in Corona called Mi Tierra Mexican Food that is in between fast-food dining and sit-down dining. We will be introducing new recipes and sticking to authentic Mexican food. When customers come to dine in our new location, we want to take them to Mexico no passport required.
