Today we’d like to introduce you to Oswald Hunter.
Hi Oswald, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in a small village in The Netherlands and faced a traumatic upbringing. I was a victim of mental and physical abuse at home by my older brothers and father—though my mother was always a source of unwavering love—and at school by my peers and teachers. At 13, I found myself homeless for about a year due to distressing circumstances. This period sparked an anger in me, fueling a determination to rebuild my life and prove my worth.
By 17, I was working in high-risk security until a serious motorcycle accident changed everything. The accident left my arm paralyzed for nearly two years, and I had to learn to walk properly again. After recovering, I transitioned to healthcare, specializing in closed facility care for individuals with multiple mental and psychological diagnoses and severe behavioral issues.
Throughout my life, I’ve harbored a strong dream of becoming an actor. At 31, I moved to Sweden for self-discovery, seeking true happiness. I began working in healthcare and as a nightclub bouncer, but I never lost sight of my passion for acting. I started to explore acting and dancing in my free time, finding immense fulfillment and purpose on stage and in front of the camera.
Determined to hone my craft, I studied at a renowned acting school in Stockholm and took various courses to enhance my techniques, drawing inspiration from greats like Meisner, Stanislavski, Uta Hagen, and Stella Adler. As I gained momentum and discovered more about myself, I decided to quit my regular jobs in 2021 to focus entirely on acting and modeling. This decision led me to sell everything I owned and live out of a tiny motorhome for a year with a very limited budget.
My perseverance and consistency paid off, and I finally began living my dream, working internationally as an actor and model. I continue to work tirelessly towards landing a role in a major feature film—not for the money or fame, but out of a deep passion for acting. Acting has saved me in indescribable ways, providing me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I cherish every day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has absolutely not been a smooth road. The biggest challenge has been facing a barrage of “no”s when applying for roles and often getting no replies at all when reaching out to agents and managers. On a personal level, a significant struggle has been—and always will be—the constant realization of how much there is to improve as an actor. Acting is an art form that demands continuous learning, discovery, and a willingness to be humbled by it.
Beyond these professional challenges, the financial instability has been tough. There have been days when I’ve barely had enough to eat, and the lack of a steady income frequently brings doubts about whether I made the right choice. However, every time I land a part, whether on stage or in front of the camera, and lose myself in the character, all those doubts, struggles, and fears disappear. It’s in those moments that I remember why I chose this path and why I continue to pursue it with all my heart.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have a strong desire to become more known for my work as a drama actor. My life experiences have given me a unique ability to channel them into building compelling imaginary worlds for viewers, fueling a passion that words can barely describe. While I have a broad range and am open to various roles, I do have a hard time envisioning myself in the DC or Marvel universe. It would be amazing to experience being a “Disney or Nickelodeon dad” aside from drama.
What I’m most proud of is not letting my past define my personality and future. Professionally, my proudest moment was stepping on stage for the first time in front of an audience. The nervousness I felt beforehand melted away as I lost myself in the character, feeling an incredible sense of freedom.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to embrace and enjoy nervousness, allowing myself to be fully present in the moment. I remember being at IPOP! in L.A., where other contestants were anxious and focused on their lines, while I was savoring the moment, delivering my performance without the fear or pressure of having to achieve something. This ability to bring truth to the moment and find inner peace in my performances is something that I believe distinguishes me from others.
Any big plans?
One incredible and wonderful change is that I’m getting married to an amazing woman. She supports my dreams, helps me grow in my faith, and keeps me strong during setbacks. At the beginning of 2025, we’ll be moving to South Africa for a while due to her work. This will be a big adventure for both of us.
From there, I plan to continue pursuing my career in Los Angeles, flying out to enhance and secure my position as an actor in Hollywood. But yes, getting married and moving to another continent are quite significant changes. I’m excited about the future and eager to see what new opportunities and experiences lie ahead.
At the end of 2024, I will also be releasing two books I have written. One children’s book and one adult drama novel.
