Today we’d like to introduce you to Oskar Avlskarl.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Oskar. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I started doing artist management back in Highschool. At the second year, a guy also named Oscar walked into class. He was the new kid and was always sitting in the back row messing with his computer. Me being a curious 15-year old had to find out what he was doing. Funny enough, he was sitting there making beats every day. I asked him if I could have a listen, he let me. And after getting to know each other a little better, he asked me what I thought of the beats he was making. I gave him my honest opinion, and then he asked me if I wanted to “try to make something happen.” Not knowing what I was saying yes to, I took on the challenge and sent it to every rapper imaginable on Soundcloud. We got some rappers on the beats, and that was it. Even though it wasn’t a success financially, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I want to help artists be artists.
I’ve always had a big interest in music, listening to everything from Barry White to Biggie Smalls. But I knew nothing about the industry and have therefore worked by the motto, “learning by doing.”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. My interest and passion for what I do can sometimes clash with reality. I’ve been very frustrated over the years by people not being able to see things the same way as artists do or as I do. I think too many people are too narrow-minded, and that can stop many great creative souls to do what they actually love to.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Avlskarl Management story. Tell us more about the business.
Until now, I’ve only been doing artist management. While doing that it has always been very important to me that the artist feels safe and confident around me. I always do my best, and I keep going, no matter what.
Recently my business associate Micky Skeel and I have decided to start our own record label, named TwentyThirty Records. Here we don’t want to form the artist; we want the artist to develop themselves. Of course, with our guidance if needed and we will always be there for them. But I think what really set us apart is that we couldn’t care less about money.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am very lucky with the people I meet. When I first came to Los Angeles, I knew nobody. But a good friend of mine and musician from Copenhagen, Barbara Miranda, introduced to a songwriter named Lars Halvor Jensen who then introduced to a lot of people that I work with today. And all this happened all because of one lunch.
