Today we’d like to introduce you to Oliver Optican.
Hi Oliver, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
A few years ago, I was working for the Clippers, barely making any money, living with my ex-girlfriend, and honestly stuck in a bad place. She was pressuring me about not pulling my weight financially, and I knew I needed to make a change — fast. I spent six months applying to jobs on LinkedIn with no luck, until my dad called and told me his best friend’s son-in-law, the president of a roofing company, was looking for salespeople.
That company was Preferred Roofing. I interviewed with the CEO, Terry Heller, who said they’d love to have me in sales, but since it was a startup with no marketing team, they also wanted me to do some marketing on the side. Here’s the thing — I had zero background in marketing. Not a single class, not one bit of experience. But I gave it a shot.
Pretty quickly it became clear that sales wasn’t for me — I couldn’t sell a roof to save my life. But marketing? That clicked. Within a month, I brought in about $900,000 worth of leads through cold email campaigns and LinkedIn outreach. The higher-ups told me straight: sales wasn’t working, but they wanted me full-time in marketing.
That was the turning point. I discovered something I not only loved, but was good at. I stayed with Preferred Roofing for about a year, built their marketing engine from the ground up, and realized I could do this on my own. I started building Optican Edge on the side, and once I had enough clients, I went all in.
Today, we’re a team of five based in Santa Monica, specializing in SEO, web design, social media management, email outreach, and more. Within my first two months, I already had three clients and was scaling fast. What started as a shot-in-the-dark sales job turned into finding my career, my passion, and ultimately my company.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road — far from it. The biggest challenge has been client acquisition and retention. Right now, we send out around 70,000 cold emails a month, and the response rate is… let’s just say it humbles you quickly. Finding solid clients has been one of the hardest parts of the journey. Most of our wins so far have come through LinkedIn outreach, and since the company is still less than a year old, I’m just now starting to see referrals and word-of-mouth pick up.
Another challenge is managing expectations. A lot of times when a client signs with a marketing agency, they think, “Great, I’m going to instantly make more money and see new leads pouring in.” But marketing doesn’t work like a light switch. I like to say: we’ll put the food on your plate and bring the fork to your mouth, but ultimately, you still have to eat it. We can build brand recognition, generate awareness, and bring in leads — but if the product or service isn’t strong, results will stall.
We’ve lost a few clients who expected overnight ROI, and that stings. But it’s also taught me an important lesson: the foundation matters. Marketing takes time, consistency, and a willingness to play the long game. Those who understand that are the clients we end up building the strongest relationships with.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Optican Edge, we’re a full-service digital marketing agency. We cover the spectrum — social media management, email outreach, LinkedIn outreach, PPC, SEO, and web design. That said, our bread and butter has really been SEO and web design. My SEO team, led by Toqeer — who we call our “SEO Dominator” — is phenomenal, and our web team knows how to transform a website into a selling magnet that ranks at the top of Google. Whether it’s building a site from scratch or revamping an existing one, we then layer in SEO campaigns to get our clients ranking higher and driving real leads.
While most of our clients come to us for websites and SEO, we also have specialists in social media, outreach, and paid ads. That allows us to provide a truly holistic approach to marketing.
One thing I’m especially proud of isn’t just the work itself, but the way we acquire clients. A good example: a fellow USC Trojan reached out to me on LinkedIn because we had that alumni connection. He worked in roofing, I had roofing marketing experience, and within a week he became a client. That moment made me proud not only of our growth but of how strong the Trojan network really is.
What really sets us apart, though, is communication. Every one of our clients has my cell and my email, and I usually respond within the hour. Strong customer service is everything. If a client needs something, I want them to feel like we’re right there — responsive, reliable, and invested in their success.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
If there’s one thing I’d share, it’s this: if you have an idea you believe in, start. Don’t just sit on it, write it down in a notebook, or keep overthinking it. No one else is going to build it for you. You have to take that first step and put things in motion.
That might mean building a simple website, launching an Instagram page, or just getting the word out to your network. The longer you wait, the greater the chance that someone else will bring a version of your idea to life — and I’ve seen that happen countless times.
Momentum is everything. Once you start, opportunities, connections, and solutions appear that you never would have seen standing still. Don’t worry about being perfect on day one — worry about getting in the game. The people who succeed aren’t always the ones with the best ideas; they’re the ones who had the courage to start and the persistence to keep going.
