Meet North Hollywood Makeup Artist: Melanie Karapetian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Karapetian.

Melanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a fascination with creatures/monsters/the like, and eventually, I realized that was an actual thing that people create, thus starting my exploring the world of makeup!

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think any artist ever travels a smooth road. Like anyone with their art, there’s the recurring struggle of if you’re good enough if it’s worth it if you should continue pressing on, and the like. It ebbs and flows, but the passion never goes away.

What is the most difficult part of what you do?
There’s always challenges in anything, and I don’t know that I can say one singular thing is hardest in particular, but certainly something that makes things more difficult is when you’re working under time constraints and need to finish something with not a lot of time at your disposal.

How do you define success?
Anything that you personally can be proud of, brings you happiness and meets your standards and visions are what I’d define as a success.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
I took a bit of a break from doing makeup for a short period to come back at it with a new energy and am looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. I’d particularly like to learn more about the special effects world. What I’d really love at some point is to be in an environment where I can be exposed to animatronics knowledge, although that’s not as often to come by nowadays, sadly.
