Today we’d like to introduce you to Nisa Marckese.
Hi Nisa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Nails by Nisa started about 5 years ago as a complete risk and adventure. I was feeling stagnant and incomplete in my life at the time. I needed change and more fulfillment. I was tired of working as an employee and wanted to be a self-made entrepreneur. I dug deep into all my passions and dreams then asked myself out of those what can I turn into a career. I have always loved getting my nails done. It’s been the easiest way to express myself in a creative way. I decided that’s where I’ll start. I saw on Instagram a nail artist (@designsbydanni) that I had been following for some time was hosting a nail class for all skill levels that included a nail kit. I signed up even though I knew I had very little experience but wanted to learn more. I had such an incredible time with a group of lovely women. I fell in love with the craft of doing nails. After that class, I went home and purchased more things to continue practicing. For months I practiced on myself and a couple friends who were willing to let me. About 6 months later in January 2020 I had gotten pretty skilled doing nails and realized it was time to get serious about my future in this career. I invested in myself and applied for beauty school to get my Manicurist License. Unfortunately, with COVID my license test was postponed until February of 2021. I passed my test on the first try and immediately started to work part time at salon open late in Hollywood while I continued to work my full time day job. I worked at that salon for about a year while I built my clientele. Once I built up my clientele I quit my day job and moved to a salon in Burbank. During my 2 years at the Burbank salon I really perfected my craft and grew my clientele to the point where I became a fully booked nail artist. By January 2024 I decided I was ready to venture out on my own to take yet another risk and find a salon where I could booth rent in and start my own business. I ended up joining the team at Kismet Collective Salon & Spa in Burbank as their only nail artist and that’s where I proudly am still located at today and still currently fully booked out.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been the smoothest road. The hardest battle was in the beginning of my career applying and joining school two months prior to Covid. Manicuring school is only supposed to take 4-5 months of your time however, Covid had pushed me back months. I wasn’t able to take my license test until February 2021 a whole year later from when I had started school. The second hardest battle was obtaining the courage and motivation to venture out on my own and become my own boss. I was nervous and afraid. I overthought everything. Did I make the right decision? Am I good enough? What if I don’t get booked out and can’t make a living? So many questions ran through my mind but I am very well aware that without risk there is truly no reward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in natural nail care. I perform dry structured gel overlay manicures on natural nails that help protect and grow out natural nails. With a little bit of nail art creation on the side.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t give up! Don’t be afraid. Keep practicing. Practice will eventually make perfect. Even though it may seem like there’s tons of other nail artists in this world there’s none that bring what you bring to the table. There’s enough clientele for everybody to share. Love yourself and give yourself grace.
