Meet Nick Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Miller.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Years ago, I started by writing quick thoughts and little stories on my blog. From that, I built a sizable audience, which gave me the confidence to develop my voice as a writer. I then wrote a novel with the support of my community, and it was published by a small imprint in Berkeley, CA. The novel—about a young man traveling through Los Angeles— struck a chord with thousands of readers and still remains a cult favorite.

I was asked by a production company in L.A. to adapt my novel into a TV show. When they asked if I knew how to write a script, I lied and said yes. I went home and studied everything I could find on screenwriting. Then I wrote the pilot with a writing partner.

We spent over a year writing and rewriting and incorporating executive notes. And then finally the production company shopped it around town. A couple of deals fell through in the final hours, but that’s how I transitioned into screenwriting — which is what I focus on now.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Writing is never a smooth road. It’s the bumpiest road in the hilliest town in the world.

You fail most of the time. It’s about enduring through failure. You have to really love it.

Nick Miller – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I work as a freelance writer. I just finished writing a feature-length thriller set in a small town in rural Washington. I’m working to develop that script with a writer/director/producer on the Warner Brothers lot. I’m also developing a TV show with some executive producers who own the rights to a dystopian sci-fi novel. And I co-wrote and co-directed a short film that recently premiered at the LA Shorts International Film Festival.

On the side, I take on copywriting (or other creative) projects. I also have a card and print line featuring my words here:https://www.nickwritesthings.com. And I have fun with words on my Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/_nickmiller/

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One day, I opened a PO Box public. I invited people to write me a letter. I immediately received hundreds of letters from people, some who just wanted to talk, but many who wrote to me about what my novel meant to them — what it still means to them. I thought that was pretty cool. You can pick up my novel here: https://www.amazon.com/Isnt-Pretty-Think-Nick-Miller/dp/0983896119
