Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Lomske
Hi Natalie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My creativity blossomed towards the end of high school when the drama club performed a stage play I wrote. Until then, I contemplated pursuing a career in medical research, but once I saw the impact of my creative work and the intrigue it evoked, I started to see how art can inspire others to make a change in the world. Filmmaking, specifically, can reach viewers all across the globe, bringing people together that are so far apart, and that is one aspect of filmmaking that inspired me to start my business.
Once I started studying film production, screenwriting, and creative writing at the University of Michigan, I began honing my skills. Since graduating, I have focused on creating films that showcase disabled and non-disabled characters from diverse backgrounds. Through my work, I strive to show disabled people living everyday lives and how they creatively navigate challenges associated with their unique disabilities. Outside of scripted work, I develop video content for my YouTube channel that explores the range of accessibility within the travel and entertainment industries.
Since childhood, I have had a passion for photography, writing, and filmmaking, and I couldn’t see myself pursuing any other career path. I enjoy introducing people to different perspectives, and I think art is the most compelling way of doing so. My everlasting interest in art is why I’ve pursued a career as a writer, director, and content creator. I want my art to facilitate discussions and encourage people to interact with each other.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I started my business, I took many risks. Securing funding for various film projects with few connections was extremely challenging, which led me to invest much of my savings in passion projects to showcase my talent and passion for storytelling. Thankfully, these projects impressed other artists and investors, and my business grew with their support. Also, while pursuing my career, I have encountered many instances where a program, film set, bathroom, or venue was not wheelchair accessible, and therefore my ability to participate was limited. As a disabled artist, I have had many discussions with people about accessibility in the entertainment industry so that disabled individuals like myself have equal opportunities. Thankfully, entertainment industry members are becoming more aware of the importance of removing architectural and physical barriers that prevent people with disabilities from being able to access artistic and employment opportunities.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Los Angeles-based writer, director, and content creator. I direct films and music videos and write screenplays and pilot scripts. While I focus mainly on creating content that showcases disabled and non-disabled characters from diverse backgrounds, I am always interested in hearing about unique projects others want to bring to life. I encourage people to contact me if they are interested in collaborating. Outside of my scripted work, I develop video content for my YouTube channel that explores the range of accessibility within the travel and entertainment industries. Through my work, I wanted to combine my love of film with my passion for disability rights and advocacy, so I pursued this career and love it. I am a freelance director and writer looking to develop another thought-provoking tale.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Consistency and diligence are imperative on the road to success. Also, if you don’t try, you never know what might happen. Before working as a writer/director, I let my doubts hold me back from trying new things. Once I embraced the unknown, success followed.
It is also important to develop good habits that keep you prepared. Every Sunday, I write a list of goals I want to reach or important projects I want to finish by the end of the week. At the end of every day, I write a to-do list for the next day that breaks down each goal or project into small, measurable, attainable steps. This process ensures I can visually track my progress, giving me a sense of fulfillment and keeping me enthusiastic about my work. This strategy helps me stay focused and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
I read whatever I can in my free time, including books, articles, blogs, and screenplays. I also watch movies and write every day. These habits have helped me become a better writer, expand my vocabulary, and keep my creativity flowing. Also, as a filmmaker, frequently watching movies is essential to learning about narrative structure and how to craft intriguing characters.
