Meet Morleigh Steinberg / ARCANE Space of Venice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morleigh Steinberg / ARCANE Space.

Morleigh, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I co- founded ARCANE Space in the Fall of 2017 with Frally Hynes. Neither of us had any formal experience in running a gallery but we both have had years of working in the arts  and in production, her in music and me in dance, theater, film; in production in general. I have been a dancer/choreographer all my life and have worked wearing many hats. I was looking for a space to mount dance work but when I saw the space, which was to become ARCANE Space, I knew I would have to pivot and present things more towards visual art work because the space was too small for performance.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We always said, “No stess…!” With that in mind we have always enjoyed the work. Has it been smooth?… so far, it has. We just expanded our space to include 2 other rooms. But now, with a bigger overhead, it is a bit more stressful. I know so many galleries around the city and country are closing. It’s not an easy time but I believe people still need and want to see art. It’s so important. It is so important that artist have space to show. I am going to do my best to keep our growth going smoothly. It might mean changing things up a bit but I am ok with that.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I don’t consider ARCANE Space being a traditional gallery in the sense that I don’t consider myself being a dealer as such. What concerns me first is supporting artists which means both giving them opportunity to exhibit and connecting them to collectors and art appreciators.  To be able to contribute to arts community- and to the community in general is important to us.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Being able to do what you love for a living. Achieving happiness in being and having a good supportive community around you!
