Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Duncan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
If I could describe myself in a phrase, the most fitting would be “jack of all trades.”
Although my most stable and ongoing creative outlet is my life in the salon, creating beautiful hair and making women feel amazing about themselves is truly my passion in life. Along with that job portrait, photography took a major launch during my time at beauty school. I got to connect with many amazing photographers and dabble into the “modeling” industry.
From thrifting vintage goods and reselling items to posing in front of a camera or painting no matter what it is creativity has completely shaped the way I live my life. It all started about seven years ago just as I was about to graduate high school. I knew I never wanted to be someone who sat at a desk job and hated their career. That was honestly the only direction I had for the rest of my life, “don’t hate your job.” It just so happened that prom was coming up and my girlfriends and I had no idea what to do with our hair.
We went to the local Paul Mitchell hair school to get updos done, and I met a girl who truly changed the course of my life. She was an ex-lawyer who after completing her program, passing her test and hundreds of thousands of dollars later realizing she hated what she was doing and needed something she could be passionate about. She was literally living my nightmare, and I wasn’t going to make the same mistake she did.
After looking into the program and getting a few tours of the school, I knew my heart had found its purpose. Not only could I sit and talk to women all day in almost a therapeutic setting but I could CREATE. It was a dream. So flash forward seven years later, I am a successful hairstylist who LOVES her career.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most creative jobs/hobbies there is always a following or client base that must be built before you become successful. It was very discouraging to have no one sitting in my chair for hours on end without getting paid during my time as a commission stylist.
This is where I learned networking is truly the strongest force, especially when we have it at the touch of our fingers with social media. Reaching out to girls to come into the salon and to get their hair done, making sure to post before and after pictures displaying my work and connecting with people for follow-ups for appointments is how I built where I am today.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I don’t like to limit myself as only a “cutting specialist” or “color specialist” I love doing it all and believe I have strong points in both. Limiting yourself with hair can become so boring, imagine doing the same art project every day, YUCK!
What sets me apart from others is my ability to connect with my clients on a personal level. You can be the best hairstylist in the world, but if you have a crap attitude, it will lead you nowhere. THAT IS THE TRUTH!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My most favorite childhood memory would probably have to be going to grandmas house and painting with her. She started me so young and ignited the creativity in my mind.
