Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi Liu
Hi Mimi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My design journey started at five years old when I blemished my parents’ kitchen walls with a pink crayon. The marks traced the letters of my name, sparking my interest in typography at an early age. My passion with art and design only grew from there, especially when I was first introduced to digital design software in high school. That was when I started learning about graphic design. Fast forward to college, where I’m now pursuing motion design as a career (and about to graduate soon!).
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has definitely not been a smooth one and is definitely not your typical educational trajectory. I first studied Cognitive Science and Linguistics in college, and then I graduated and shifted over to studying Graphic Design at an art school. I realized I was definitely more passionate about design than anything else. In the beginning, it took a lot of convincing to get my parents on board for me to pursue a creative career, but as I was able to show them that I was serious about it and was committed to doing well, they slowly came to accept my decision.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I currently study graphic design with a focus in motion design. I am most proud of my growth and how far I’ve come with the skillset and knowledge that I’ve developed over the years. My designs are usually simple but bold, and communicate a strong message, no matter what the subject is.
How do you define success?
Success is when you fail. It’s not an end goal, it’s a journey. If you’re failing and learning from those failures, you are succeeding.
