Today we’d like to introduce you to Milan Beker.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Music has been my craft for as long as I can remember, starting with piano lessons at age 3. As I got older, my musical tastes changed and I ventured into learning other instruments. By 14, I was also playing the sax and guitar and had made the decision to stick with music as a career. While in high school, I developed an interest in audio engineering, which led to an internship at a recording studio in downtown Toronto.
After graduating high school, I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA where I majored in Music Production and Engineering. This program furthered my knowledge in the field as well as honed my craft and musicality. After graduating in 2016, I moved to LA and began to work at Interscope Studios, first as a Recording Studio Assistant and later engineering sessions as well.
Presently, I work as a freelance music producer and engineer, usually engineering sessions out of Republic Studios, where I’ve had the pleasure to work since 2017.
Has it been a smooth road?
For me, this has definitely not been a smooth road. I’ve faced many challenges along the way, starting with moving to a different country and being away from my family. It’s very difficult to start from scratch in a new place, especially in the music industry where you don’t always start in the position you’re most qualified for. It’s definitely an experience-based field and it’s expected of you to put in your hours or “pay your dues”, especially in a studio environment. People may not know your full capabilities right away, and it’s up to you to stay patient, work with it, and find the right opportunity to make your talents known. Everyone moves to LA to “spread their wings” and it can be challenging to do so in a place where everyone wants to shine as well.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My main venture in life has always been music. I like how diverse the field can be, and how I can find myself doing something different on any given day, ranging from producing to recording or mixing, performing, or working as studio personnel setting up sessions and troubleshooting.
One of my specialties in the production world, and definitely one of my strengths is my piano skills. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some great artists due to this, notably working with Metro Boomin on various songs and projects. I ended up lending additional production duties as well as keyboards to his album “Not All Heroes Wear Capes”, which hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and was certified Gold by the RIAA, definitely my biggest achievement so far. I also co-wrote and co-produced one of the songs on the album, “Overdue” featuring Travis Scott, which peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100.
One of the things that set me apart from others is my perseverance and dedication to my craft. In the music industry, sometimes work and achievements can come like hills and valleys, where sometimes you don’t know when you’ll get your next opportunity to shine. It’s very important during those moments to stay focused and make sure you don’t lose hope. When the well is dry, it’s important to keep improving at what you do, and never stop creating.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe there are different kinds of success such as financial and career success. While I think I still have a long way to go to consider myself “financially successful”, I’ve achieved certain career benchmarks that I’m proud of, such as working on records that have charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and working on an album that became certified Gold by RIAA.
Another kind of career success is your personal network; your connections, the people you know, and the people you can depend on. This is something that I constantly work on in my career and each person that you meet and connect with can potentially be another career opportunity.
