Meet Melissa Schaefers of Mel schaefers hair in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Schaefers.

Melissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In August of 2007, I made the big leap to California from the Midwest. At only 18 years old my interest in learning about hair in a big city drove me through a quick 10 months in beauty school. I was constantly meeting industry mentors in additional outside courses which led me to my next position as an assistant. I worked in one of the most prestige salons in Beverly Hills under the most talented hairstylist I have seen to date.

He shared his skills and knowledge that help to mold the hairstylist I am. It was an extremely intense 2-year program which inevitably landed me on the floor at Helmet salon, where I have been working the last 8 years.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I definitely wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road but it has been a uniquely rewarding one. Trying to stay up to date on all the lastest hairtrends and growing your clientele is a lot of work, outside of styling behind the chair. I believe with all social media content it’s so easy to have education and inspiration at your fingertips it’s not as hard to keep your skill set fresh.

Please tell us about Mel schaefers hair.
I have been in the industry as a hairstylist for 10 years. I cut, color, and style hair. I also have tons of experience with extensions. For me, it’s about the total look. I feel so lucky to have had a clientele that has grown with me. It makes it even more amazing when you know their hair and how it will react to change.

My balayage and haircuts are what I am best known for, I am most proud of how I can make someone feel changed, refreshed, and beautiful. This fuels my passion for seeing clients and ultimately makes me happiest.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
There is absolutely nothing I would do differently if I had the chance to start over. I worked extremely hard the last 10 years to get where I am and I feel I have landed the perfect balance between personal and business in my life.
