Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Rodriguez.
Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a little girl, I always loved either being a part of Weddings or attending Weddings. Weddings to me always seemed so beautiful, and everyone always looked so happily in love. As cliche as it sounds, I ended up watching “The Wedding Planner” with Jennifer Lopez, and I knew then exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up.
The problem when I grew up was, what were the necessary steps to achieve my goal. After High School, I actually struggled through College with no motivation on how to get to where I wanted to be, but after a year I realized that the best way to begin was to major in Business Management, specializing in Hospitality.
From that point, I was introduced into the Wedding Industry in 2016 when I earned an internship with the well-acclaimed Wedding Planner and owner of Sweetest Love Events, Sharon Gonzalez. After the internship, I was able to gain insight and knowledge about the wedding industry by learning the responsibilities and valuable skills that go into every detail throughout the wedding process.
Next, I got an opportunity to become the Floral and Event Designer/Event Manager at Lifetime Weddings and Events/The Villa Banquets in Westminster, California. I not only received an experience that I will forever take with me through my career, but I also ended up gaining a Mentor named Nikki Tran.
I am where I am today, not only because of my persistence but also because of my mentor. Nikki has taught me everything that I need to know about Weddings, and I will forever be grateful.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I would say that the hardest part was not knowing how to become a Wedding Planner. Classes on becoming a Wedding Planner have only come about recently, but when I got out of High School, there was never a structured path that you could take to get into the Wedding industry.
As I saw everyone talking about what their path was after High School, I did not know how to talk about my own, or how to discuss achieving my goals, which became extremely discouraging, I felt like I had to take another route or give up and choose another goal. I actually was about to go to school to become a Paralegal, until the week before school started, I kept having bad anxiety, and I decided not to go through with it.
From that point, I realized there was no other option but to find a way to get to where I wanted to be, which was when I decided to major in Business Management, specializing in Hospitality, and I went on my way to become the Wedding Planner I am now.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the OhMissy Events story. Tell us more about the business.
What sets OhMissy Events apart from others is the perception I have of being a wedding planner, which comes from my willingness to give my couples everything they dream of and much more. The fact that I have Event Design in my background is what I think OhMissy Events specializes in; it definitely helps me deliver for every Bride and Groom.
The desire is to leave the bride and groom feeling full of love, passion, and beauty after each wedding, just like every Wedding has left me feeling since I was a little girl. My number one mission is to ensure that I leave every newlywed or celebrant saying, “Oh Missy!” after every event!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Honestly, I am not sure I believe in Good Luck or Bad Luck necessarily. I truly believe in the work that goes behind it, and the persistence that you put forward.
It may just be because I never had Good Luck or Bad Luck to go by, which is why I kept being persistent in wanting to achieve my goal, but I really don’t think that luck had any role in where I am today.
