Meet Melissa Markus of Radiant Lash and Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Markus.

Hi Melissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got my first job at a local hair salon in high school, which was my first introduction to the beauty industry. I’ve always loved aesthetics but to my surprise, what moved me the most was how the stylists made their clients feel confident and beautiful. Seeing such daily transformations sparked my desire to learn more so I enrolled in cosmetology school.

I loved every minute of it, from the teachers and the community, to the creative environment and artistic process. Out of all the skills I learned in cosmetology school, I realized my passion was makeup. After graduating, I enrolled in a specialized makeup school where I learned techniques, color theory, and how to work with different face types.

With my cosmetology license in hand, I could go into any specialty. I took an opportunity to assist a top hairstylist and after two years, I confirmed my passion was in makeup. Luckily, the salon needed an in-house makeup artist, and I got my own station. It didn’t take long for me to realize that clients don’t get their makeup done daily which made me concerned that I wouldn’t be able to build out the vision I had for my career.

In 2016, I took an eyelash extension course and that’s when everything changed. At that time, it was a new service, so I practiced on friends and family, and focused on traditional tactics to promote my business: I handed out flyers, went door to door, posted on every coffee shop bulletin board in the area and introduced myself to local salons. I felt like I finally found my niche and was determined to build a clientele.

Slowly, I grew my business and moved into my own studio space within a salon suite. Having my own space was a great launching pad but it was only the beginning, I knew I wanted more! I’m a big believer in journaling and manifestation, and one of my dreams was to open my own salon boutique.

In 2021, during the pandemic, I found the perfect space to bring my vision to life – this would become Radiant Lash & Beauty in Westlake Village. Flash forward to today, I have the most loyal clientele and feel so grateful to everyone who supported me on this journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been an easy journey, partly because I didn’t have support from mentors—in fact, I was told it would be too hard to build a career and I would never make it. That lack of encouragement pushed me to work even harder, because I constantly felt like I had to prove myself. It took a toll on me mentally, and self-doubt became a daily struggle. Over time I learned how to shift those negative thoughts into positive ones. I’ve found ways to stay grounded and remain true to who I am.

As you know, we’re big fans of Radiant Lash and Beauty. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I offer many services such make up, eye brow lamination, facial waxing, dermaplaning but it’s my expertise and reputation in Eyelash Extensions that gets me the most attention because they are truly a unique artform. I just love the entire process of making my clients feel beautiful. My favorite moment is getting to witness how confident my clients feel after an appointment. When I hand over the mirror for a client to see the final result and they can’t believe how good they look – THAT is the most rewarding feeling in the world!

My intention with Radiant Lash & Beauty is to create a calm, collaborative space where my clients feel connected to their inner and outer beauty. My clients trust me. It makes me feel extremely honored and proud that they feel comfortable enough in my presence to share glimpses of their lives. As the saying goes, “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” That is something I don’t take for granted.

I believe what sets me apart is how deeply I care for every client and how they feel. I do my best to honor who they are and use my work as a way to help them see their own beauty. Not only that, I really pay attention to detail, take my time and listen to my clients – communication is key! Another perk of my work is that I get to see and sometimes share, so many milestone moments, like getting married, having kids, buying a first home… it’s the relationships I’ve built that matter most.

How do you define success?
To me, success is doing what I love every day and staying true to myself, even when the path wasn’t easy. It’s about growing through challenges, building real connections with my clients, and never giving up on the dreams I worked so hard for. For me, it’s not just about reaching career goals, it’s also about enjoying the journey and staying grounded and authentic along the way.
