Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Lovoy.
Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was twelve when I decided I wanted to have a store one day. After studying design in NY and working as a designer for many years I decided to come out to LA to give it a try. When you own a small business, you wear many hats and are constantly learning new things as you grow. It’s been a wonderful adventure of discovering beautiful clothing, housewares and more. The most rewarding part of having a store is becoming part of the community and having the opportunity to share the story of all of our products with others.
Has it been a smooth road?
Owning a small business is never a smooth road. There are always ups and downs along the way as the market, the world and people change. We have been very lucky to have loyal customers in the neighborhood who like what we offer and support us.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is called Lake. We are a neighborhood lifestyle boutique in Silver Lake. We began ten years ago before the Silver Lake boom began. We specialize in smaller designers and European designers. Many of the lines we carry are made in LA. We are known for a mix of color and patterns in both the clothing and the housewares we carry.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We are experiencing a boom right now in many different creative fields in our city. The city is still ripe to allow small businesses to flourish but with all the hype the city must be careful that young designers / artists and entrepreneurs are not priced out of the city.
