Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Soo.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started when I graduated from high school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, I didn’t get accepted into the any of the universities I wanted (at the time, I was applying for the BFA in Dance). So I took a year or two off to travel and figure out what I should do with my life. So I also started looking for interesting jobs and things to do and came across background acting, I thought why not – I could use the extra money for my travel plans. First day on set, I fell in love with everything behind and infront the camera. Up until this point, I had never felt this interested in a job field, so after than long story short, I started looking for auditions and submitting myself for roles, taking acting classes, and eventually landed my first role in Return of Xander Cage starring Vin Diesel. From there, I competed in two beauty pageants, Miss Asia Canada, a national pageant in which I was awarded Miss Asia Canada 1st Runner Up and then competed in an international pageant in Seoul, Korea, Miss SuperTalent, being crowned Miss Trinidad & Tobago.
Which is what got me into singing. We had a vocal and performance component in the pageant where we had weekly vocal lessons and at the end, we had to pick something to perform live on stage (could be dance, singing, anything). At the time, I decided to dance and lip sync to a song, but I fell in love performing live in a stage for an audience, call it the Leo in me, but I remember thinking to myself OMG I want to do this forever, from then on I started taking vocal lessons after the pageant and finding my own unique sound to which now has lead me to touring on the Boys Of Summer tour and getting to perform my music live.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was never a smooth road, having strict parents and an Asian father, they both always wanted me to do something in Science or Law or honestly anything other than “the arts”. So I took me some time to realize that if this is what I want to do I just need to go full force into it, so decided after college (I was studying Kinesiology and had just gotten a job at a private health and wellness facility), I decided to quit and focus on acting and music. Which led to more road bumps being an artist; income and location. Working multiple random jobs just to fund your career and invest in yourself. I was living in Toronto and felt stuck after a certain point like if I was going to make it or have a fighting chance to make it, I had to move to LA. Sounds cliche, but I truly believed it and still do. And that whole visa process alone was a major struggle, not to mention the cost, but being in LA now if was all worth it. I feel like the opportunities here are endless and “the arts” is taken more seriously here as a career and not just a fun hobby.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
