Meet Megan Blomqvist of Thousand Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Blomqvist.

Hi Megan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been a creative human. While I didn’t know exactly where I’d land, I knew I wanted to build a career in a creative field. I studied graphic design, but I’ve always loved photography, drawing, painting, and music. They’ve all shaped how I see the world.

I lived in Sweden with my husband for awhile, where I explored different creative paths, including teaching art and apprenticing at a tattoo studio. After moving back home, I took a graphic design job that didn’t quite feel right. But when I stepped in to take photos for a project, everything clicked. That moment led me to shift into photography full-time.

I later worked as an in-house photographer for a company with several beauty brands, where I discovered my passion for beauty photography. Over the past seven years, I’ve built my career in the commercial beauty space, developing both my style and approach.

After becoming a parent, my perspective shifted again. I found myself drawn to capturing real family life: images that feel honest, emotional, and true to the moment. I fell in love with documentary-style photography, focusing on the beauty in everyday chaos and connection.

Two years ago, I started my own business, Blomqvist Creative, combining both sides of my work: commercial photography for brands and documentary-style family sessions. Over the past year, I also worked closely with a local studio, gaining valuable experience that continues to shape what I do and who I am. I am now working in a new space, hoping to help build something inspiring and build community.

Today, I split my time between studio work, photographing models and products, and capturing meaningful, real-life moments for families. No matter the setting, my goal is the same: to create images that feel natural, thoughtful, and lasting.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have absolutely been challenges along the way. One of the biggest has been learning to set boundaries. I care deeply about my work and my clients, and I often find myself wanting to do everything for everyone. I am a perfectionist when it comes to my work as well, which can quickly turn into working through all my free time. When you run your own business, it’s not always easy to switch off, and finding a healthy work-life balance is something I’m still learning.

Becoming a mom also brought a major shift in my identity. There were moments where I felt disconnected from myself, trying to rediscover my confidence, creativity, and sense of purpose. At the same time, this line of work can feel surprisingly isolating. Even though I spend short bursts of time with people, much of the work happens alone. Editing, planning, and creating behind the scenes.

Balancing those feelings of isolation while finding my spark again has been an ongoing journey. It’s something I continue to navigate, both personally and professionally.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I named my business Blomqvist Creative because I didn’t want to be limited to one medium. Keeping it open-ended allows me to help bring ideas to life in whatever form they take; from photography and video to creative direction, murals, and more.

I specialize in capturing real moments, images that take you back to how it felt to be there. I especially love in-home sessions, stepping into a family’s space and finding the beauty in their everyday rhythm. My approach is not about perfect posing or forced smiles. Instead, I gently guide and prompt, giving families the freedom to be themselves and bring their own personalities into the session.

Sometimes that looks like something as simple as playing board games together. Moments that may seem ordinary, but are actually deeply meaningful. Capturing those interactions in an honest and artistic way is what makes each session unique. It also takes the pressure off, allowing everyone to feel comfortable and connected. Which is always my goal.

One of the most meaningful compliments I’ve received came from a friend who said they wished they had known me when their kids were younger, so I could have captured their family in this way. That really stuck with me, it reminded me that this work truly connects with people.

On the commercial side, I take pride in being hands-on throughout the entire process. I often produce, shoot, and edit my projects from start to finish. While I’m learning to delegate more, there’s something incredibly rewarding about seeing a vision come to life exactly as I imagined it.

What sets me apart is that I haven’t confined myself to just one niche. While I’ve often heard that narrowing your focus is the key to success, I’ve found that staying open has allowed me to keep growing, exploring, and evolving. It’s also led to meaningful relationships, both personal and professional, that I may not have found otherwise.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my husband, Niklas, and my family. They’ve always been my biggest cheerleaders; constantly encouraging me, believing in my skills, and supporting truly every creative path I’ve taken.

My job can get pretty crazy, and Niklas often holds down the fort whenever is needed. He was also incredibly supportive when I decided to quit my job and go out on my own, when we both had no idea where that would lead us. Our two boys, Axel and Viggo, keep me on my toes in the best way. They inspire me daily to stay creative and adaptable. And the support from my parents and sisters, each in their own way, has meant everything. I truly couldn’t do this without them.

I have also had some pretty special friendships and professional relationships, that have helped to shape my career and self, and am immensely grateful for those.
