Meet Maurice Savage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Savage.

Maurice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Creative writing was something I always looked forward to growing up in school. Though I never took it serious, at the time. It was something I knew I was good at… when I actually effort into it. As I got older, writing became an outlet for me. When I wasn’t comfortable expressing myself to anyone else. I could always count on my pen and paper. To not only listen to my thoughts, but never judge me for them. That turned into me writing poetry. Which I never saw myself doing. I began to speak in different places/churches all over (hometown) Memphis, Tn and surrounding areas. After a few years and a big move to Los Angeles. That passion grew to wanting to tell stories in a different way, through film. As the years have passed, I’ve grown more confident in my craft and the ability God gave me to write (with my good friend Brandon Walker.) As of today, I have put out a poetry book, currently working on a few scripts and a new poetry book. I’m excited to of come this far.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been smooth, which is alright. I think for me, my biggest struggle was my confidence. I didn’t think I was as great as I could be at writing and it caused me to force myself into this shell. Along with that, I’ve wanted to give up SO many times or completely went through phases of losing faith in my vision. I have personally been my biggest struggle. It’s also apart of the story so I wouldn’t trade those moments. It makes me more grateful even to be where I’m at right now.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My biggest role model is my older brother. He has been such a positive active brother in my life. I’ve learned so much from him in my life. He takes time out to teach me the principles of life. My biggest motivation is my mother. I would love to say I want to give her the world, but she doesn’t want the world. She wants to see her baby boy succeed and that’s all the motivation I need. Thinking back on times we’ve struggled keeps me up at night and motivated. My little sister as well. She’s one hard worker and I want to see her dreams come true and anyway I can help I will. I have many people who have played a big role. I could go on and on about this. But to name a few others, Tarik black, my best friend. Brenton Smith, the reason I moved to LA, his story is amazing! Elaine Enis, she’s always believed and supported me, Pastor Rick, he made me start reading, Eric Boyce, how he takes care of people around him and supports literally all his friends. So many people to name and I owe thanks to, this list won’t stop. Above all, I want to make my family proud and put us all in great positions to succeed in whatever we choose.
