Meet Mary She

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary She. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Mary She

Mary She is a 21-year-old Egyptian-American singer-songwriter born and raised in the Bay Area. Her passion for music began at a young age, as she started singing and playing various instruments, including the piano, guitar, harp, and ukulele, when she was just four years old. In 2018, Mary embarked on her musical career by sharing captivating covers on her Instagram, which helped her amass a dedicated following. After graduating high school in 2020, Mary took a leap of faith and released her debut single, “Bittersweet.” This marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life, as she relocated to Los Angeles to pursue her musical aspirations.

In July 2023, Mary made a triumphant return to the music scene with her latest single, “Soul n Body.” This captivating track experiments with a blend of early 2000s R&B vibes infused with elements of jazz and Arabic influences.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles Mary faced was moving from the Bay Area to Los Angeles by herself right after high school. With no connections besides the ones she created online, she got out of her comfort zone and networked through the use of social media and live events in Los Angeles. Another struggle she faced was navigating the industry by herself as an independent artist. With no manager and no family ties in the industry, it was easy to be misled by lots of artists who lacked follow through on their word or with ill intentions. This felt very isolating at times. With time, she learned to trust her gut and now has a close circle of trusted individuals with her best intentions in mind.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Mary She is a multi-instrumental singer-songwriter with a heavy background in classical voice. With the ability to understand musical theory and an immediate comfort in working with various genres, it allows her the upper hand when it comes to creating as she has many experiences to pull from. Being an Egyptian-American artist who grew up listening to lots of music by Arab artists such as Fairuz and Umm Kalthoum, she can easily sing Arabic melodies and implement them into her songwriting. She also has a deep love and appreciation for classic rock and jazz, influenced by the melodies of Ella Fitzgerald and the songwriting of Billy Joel. She is self-taught on the guitar and ukulele, which she picked up to help her accompany herself on her Instagram covers throughout her career. Her greatest achievement is taking the leap of faith to take a chance on herself, move out, and chase her dreams.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
One of the biggest lessons learned during covid is that social media networking can get you extremely far. With the entire internet accessible at your fingertips, the opportunities to meet other creatives are endless. Everything you want to learn and teach yourself can be accessed through YouTube or many social media platforms. Audiences still crave genuine art from real people (despite how discouraging social media can seem at times). The ability to develop yourself as an artist while expanding your network is something that many take for granted, but Mary She was once Vocal. Mary and she owes many success to the fans who have supported her throughout her career.
