Meet Marquis Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquis Williams.

Marquis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a kid, I grew up in Los Angeles a big Lakers fans and basketball was my escape. In my first book titled Beating the system: my life in foster care, I talk about my life struggles as a kid and really how I used basketball to manage the stress and over the trauma. I also mention how much Kobe Bryant inspired me and how after meeting him at his basketball camp, it gave me a new purpose in life. After graduating from college and publishing my first book, I had this creative feeling deep down that wasn’t satisfying. I wanted to do something different than most authors. So right before I began writing my second book, I decided to take the themes from my life story and turn into a shoe and clothing merch. My message has always been about resilience, motivation and determination no matter who you are or what your current circumstance is currently in life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road for me. I have a lot of mentors to thank for my achievements along the way. I never really saw myself as someone going to college and now I have a MBA. I graduated high school not passing the English entrance exams and now I’ve written two books. My point is that I’ve never let my struggles or self-doubt or anyone else stop me from pursuing my dreams or goals. There were many times during the writing and creative process I wanted to give up because It became too emotionally draining to recount my childhood but I knew that this was much bigger than myself and it’s ultimately what got me through the challenges.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a public speaker, author and designer of the Q20’s. My books and merchandise can be found on JustMarquis.com.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood Is when I got the chance to meet Kobe Bryant, talk to him and interact with other kids from all over the world. Up until that time, I hadn’t really met anyone famous so to meet someone that was childhood idol and actually get to hang out with him for about a week was incredible. I really learned a lot from him and I still vividly remember that experience. It’s something ill never forget.
