Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Sutton.
Hi Mark, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been boxing on and off for about 20 years. I got started in the Bay Area, then moved down to Los Angeles in 2012, where I had the chance to train under the late Coach Stan Ward, who taught me most of what I know about the sport. From the beginning, I knew I wanted to coach. I wasn’t the most athletic and dealt with ongoing knee issues, so my success in the ring came from outsmarting opponents rather than out-powering them.
While working in the film industry for over a decade, I spent most of the long 12-14 hour days studying boxing watching fights, breaking down technique, and learning as much as I could. That passion eventually led me to open a boxing gym in 2021, originally under a different name. After some changes in the business, I took full ownership and rebranded it as Shark Boxing Club in 2024.
I’ve been coaching our amateur fighters for the past three years, and I’m proud to say every one of them have a winning record under my guidance. We’ve had two Golden Gloves regional champs, a Golden Gloves state champ, and took a fighter to the National Championships, where he held his own against the #2 ranked boxer in the country.
Coaching has become more than a job, it’s what I’m passionate about. I love helping people build confidence through real skill and discipline. My focus now is growing Shark Boxing Club into a space where anyone can come in, learn real boxing, and feel part of something solid, whether they want to fight or just train.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most new business owners, I’ve had to learn a lot on the fly, everything from managing operations and finances to building a consistent client base. There were definitely challenges behind the scenes as well, navigating tough decisions, managing growing pains, and learning how to adapt on the fly. Those experiences taught me how important it is to trust my instincts, stay focused on the bigger picture, and lead with clarity and purpose.
On the coaching side, it can be challenging working with fighters who think they already have it all figured out, especially when they’ve already picked up bad habits in or out of the ring. Getting them to commit to a structure, trust the process, and unlearn what’s holding them back takes a lot of patience. But when I see it start to click, it’s one of the most rewarding parts of the job. The road hasn’t always been smooth, but every challenge has pushed me to grow and stay focused on building something real and lasting.
We’ve been impressed with Shark Boxing Club, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Shark Boxing Club is a boxing gym for everyone that’s rooted in authenticity. We’re proud to be the only boxing gym in Pasadena that actively trains and develops competitive boxers, but what really sets us apart is our ability to do that while still making space for beginners, fitness-focused members, and anyone looking to build confidence through boxing. We specialize in teaching real boxing technique, not just boxing-inspired workouts, and our coaching approach meets people where they’re at.
I personally specialize in developing fighters from the ground up, taking someone with no experience and helping them grow into a skilled, confident boxer. We’ve created a space where people of all levels can train seriously, feel supported, and know they’re learning something real, whether they ever plan to compete or not. More than anything, we’re building a community where everyone pushes each other to be better every day.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The most important part of finding a mentor is just showing up and staying consistent. You have to want it for yourself more than anyone else does. I don’t coach fighters who are inconsistent, skip training, or make excuses. Effort, attitude, and consistency speak louder than anything else.
You also have to get in the room, put yourself in the environment where you can grow, be challenged, and be seen. The right mentors will take notice when you show you’re serious, not just by showing up physically, but mentally too. You can’t expect someone to invest in you if you’re not fully invested in yourself first.
