Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariana Matos.
Hi Mariana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am Mariana, an accomplished Brazilian artist whose dance journey commenced in Uberlandia, MG. Throughout my professional career as a dancer, I sought avenues to enrich my expertise. This quest led me to embrace circus acrobatics, culminating in the acquisition of a degree in Circus Arts from the Nacional Circus School of Brazil.
Eager to apply my newfound skills, my journey unfolded remarkably as I secured my inaugural contract with Ringling Brothers and Barnum Circus. This opportunity paved the way for a series of subsequent contracts, each contributing to my growth as an artist and further solidifying my place in the world of circus arts.
Amidst my travels and diverse experiences, I encountered the alluring art of hair suspension, which instantly bewitched me with its captivating allure. I dedicated myself ardently to mastering this rare and intricate art form, infusing it with elements of dance and my rich Brazilian heritage.
My artistic pursuits reached new heights when I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Cirque du Soleil, an experience that further honed my skills and broadened my artistic vision. Fusing my dance background with the mesmerizing art of hair suspension, I crafted a spellbinding performance that has enchanted audiences worldwide.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey hasn’t been easy. My hometown, Uberlândia, is a small, rural city, which made it challenging for me to learn. Back then, there were no places to learn circus arts, and my family, always humble, couldn’t afford dance classes for me. Nonetheless, my passion burned bright. Since I was little, I knew the stage was where I belonged; it was in my blood.
At the age of nine, I went alone to a dance school and asked for a scholarship. From there, I became a professional in ballet, jazz, and hip-hop. When my interest turned to circus arts, I had to learn everything from videos, as there were no teachers in my city. Finally gaining entry to the Nacional Circus School felt like a dream coming true.
Yet, the hardest part, even now, is being far from my family. While the road fulfills me, and taking my art to different parts of the world holds immense meaning, not having those I love nearby leaves a persistent void.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My journey in the circus world has been diverse and thrilling. Beginning as a versatile aerialist mastering silks, Lyra, trapeze, and straps, I gradually ventured into more daring acts. The pinnacle of my aerial feats was becoming the sole female performer in a high-wire daredevil act. Additionally, I had the unique privilege of being an elephant rider, achieving the remarkable feat of riding Bo, the largest elephant in the US.
However, it was my immersion in the mesmerizing art of hair suspension that became the turning point in my career, setting me apart from others in the field. Hair suspension, an exhilarating aerial circus act, involves being suspended by one’s hair while weaving a captivating tapestry of dance movements, spins, and intricate body figures.
This enthralling performance showcases the boundless potential of the human body, transcending conventional limits to create an awe-inspiring spectacle. Through hair suspension, audiences witness firsthand the incredible fusion of artistry and physical prowess, a testament to the harmony between mind and body.
Whether as a performer or an audience member, the experience of hair suspension is unforgettable, pushing the boundaries of possibility and leaving an indelible impression on all who witness its breathtaking display
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those venturing into this journey, my foremost advice would be to infuse every act with your soul. While dedicating time to mastering the techniques is crucial, it’s equally essential to make each performance your own. Remember, it’s not just about flawless execution; it’s about connecting with your audience. Leave them with something unforgettable, something that resonates long after the curtains close. That lasting connection is what will etch your name in their memories.
