Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus.
Hi Marcus, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in the Jordan Downs projects of Watts, where my mother, Florida Ellis, raised me and my two younger sisters on her own. Life was rough, but she was tougher—her strength and tough love kept me out of gangs, away from drugs, and focused on my future.
At 14, we moved to North Hollywood, where basketball became my passion. I later began coaching kids, determined to be the mentor I never had. But life took a hard turn—I faced homelessness, struggled to find my path, and drifted from my true passions of writing and acting.
In the early ’90s, I found my way into acting, starting with background work in TV and film, and taking theater courses in college. But nothing prepared me for the loss of my mom three years ago. She was my best friend, and losing her left me broken and in the darkest place of my life.
Just a week after her funeral, I decided to honor her wish for me to return to school. In 2023, I graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Theater Arts. Soon after, I starred in the play “The Trick” and later landed a lead role as Montrellous in the hit broadway play, Clyde’s. Within a year, I booked multiple projects, most of them lead roles in short films.
Today, everything I do is driven by her legacy. My mission is to live with purpose, excel in my craft, and make my mom proud. Her belief in me is what fuels my ambition, and her love is what keeps me going.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I faced many challenges and obstacles along the way. One of the toughest was becoming homeless for several years. It was a deeply difficult time, and I didn’t want anyone to know, not even my mom. I refused to rely on anyone, so I endured it quietly. There were a few friends who let me crash on their couch, and in some cases, I found opportunities to sleep at my job. As hard as it was, that period made me tougher and taught me lessons no school ever could.
Then, in August 2022, I faced the greatest challenge of my life, losing my mom. Nothing could have prepared me for that loss.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve worked for LA Parks and Recreation for over 20 years, running the sports program and helping organize basketball leagues. These days, I’m grinding in the world of acting, and things are going well. I’ve been cast in exciting projects such as Squid Game and the hit Broadway play Clyde’s.
It’s taken me most of my life to get to where I am now as an actor. There was a lot of procrastinating. For some people, success comes at a young age; for others, it happens later. I’m just grateful to be accomplishing my goals , and I’m able to thrive doing what I love. Acting is my passion, and I’m thankful every day to be living it.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me most is working hard and leading by example—showing people that even when the sun goes down and we’re left in darkness, the next morning it will rise again and bring light. That’s how I approach life. No matter how dark the moment, there’s always another day, another chance. I want to continue to be great in my mom’s absence, carrying her spirit with me, and make my family and friends proud.
