Today we’d like to introduce you to Mac Solomon.
Mac, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m from the Bay Area originally, Oakland born, Hayward raised. I was a student-athlete for a majority of my life from elementary school all the way to college. Once I stopped playing, I transitioned into the fitness industry where I started out cleaning bathrooms and doing front desk work. From there I got certified and began my fitness career which then eventually led me here to LA to pursue my dream of being a celebrity fitness trainer.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth couldn’t be any further from the truth. Whenever you’re chasing a goal, it’s never going to be an easy one. That is if it’s worth having. There’s been more downs than ups. From being rejected to going broke multiple times, to working for free or little next to nothing because you believe what you’re doing is going to pay off. It’s all a grind. But you have to take a gamble because there’s no certainty that anything you’re doing is going to work. Anyone that comes to Hollywood to pursue their dream knows exactly what I’m talking about. You have to literally become obsessed with making it to a certain degree.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I have a fitness brand called Projext Fitness where I mostly do private training, online training, and group training, My group training is a class I do called HIIT-ROBIX which is tempo-based hip hop aerobics class. It’s made up of HIIT and strength training exercises which feels like a party when there’s a certain amount of people in there. I went on my first domestic tour last year where I did pop-up classes in Houston, Santa Clarita, San Diego, and back here in LA. I plan on doing more cities this year.
I think what sets me apart from everyone is my versatility. Outside of my main business, I have a clothing line called Projext Apparel and a podcast called Gems with my business partner Jordan Collins, owner of Kozy. On paper, it might seem like I do a lot of things but I do different things all within the same industry. Clients can buy my merchandise online or if they come to a class. And as far as the podcast goes, I still have topics about fitness so it all ties in together. Sometimes it’s not about starting 5 different business but starting 5 business within 1 business.
Not everyone can afford my private training or online training so I want to make sure I can reach the most people that I possibly can. That way the focus is still on fitness and getting people to their goals. It just all comes down to how you want to get there. Is it through private 1 on 1 training? Online training? Or do you want to get lit with us in a HIIT-ROBIX class and burn a bunch of calories. I always have options.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes. I learned that online is the future and that my business will be transitioning more into the online space in the near future. I love private in-person training but that’s not practical for me long term. Online is how you scale and get your time back. At some point, you need to look at your life and ask yourself if trading your time for money is what you’d like to do long term.
