Meet Louie Alfaro of Robohemoth Music

Today we’d like to introduce you to Louie Alfaro.

Louie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Back when I was a child in the early 90’s, I had no real education or formal training in music. I was born to immigrant parents who had fled from the brutal Salvadoran civil war of the 80’s. Consequently, my family struggled and worked themselves sick to get themselves out of dire straits, so it stands to reason that music lessons and private academies were far out of the question. We lived out of a trailer in Inglewood, CA, so the only real education I received was from the various records my parents would listen to, and from video game soundtracks.

In 2001, I was 15 and picked up my first drum kit. It wasn’t too difficult to learn since I had a natural understanding of rhythm & tempo. I was in & out of failed rock bands in high school. I also auditioned for a couple of bands when I was in junior college and was met with even greater failure. Needless to say, I was greatly discouraged and seemingly out-classed by most musicians my age.

Disillusioned, dropped out of college and bouncing from one dead-end job to another, I decided to go the business route in 2007. I bore witness to some of the really screwed up and crooked inner workings of the finance industry when I got my real estate license at 19.

This became a turning point in my life because the events that transpired during the global economic crisis of 2008, were ultimately what set me on this path of creating music with anti-corruption, and socio-political overtones. I still lacked the technical skills to produce music on my own. This is when I decided to bury myself in student debt to acquire the skills necessary to record, engineer, and produce my own material.

While seeking an education in audio engineering, I stumbled upon the LA film school, which is where I ended up getting most of my technical training in audio engineering and audio mixing for film. I’ve since worked on tons of projects and have created my own brand of music.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road thus far has absolutely NOT been a smooth one. I’ve been hit with emotional and financial challenges almost every step of the way. I have massive student loan debt looming over me, which oddly enough, turned out to be the inspiration for one of my tracks.

The other massive challenge I face is the constant imbalance of film work vs. music. They’re like my children, one makes money, the other loves to spend it.

Please tell us about Robohemoth Music.
I’m now producing music as an independent artist and mixing audio for various clientele. My first notable gig was working in the sound department for the 2009 MTV video music awards. Since then, I’ve worked on and mixed over 180 individual projects, including an award-winning travel series with The New York Times. I also started my own brand of music, successfully funding a mural project/music video entitled, “Wall Street Government” through Kickstarter. I have been working side-by-side with world-class musicians to bring my latest project (No Robo) to a broader audience. Through a combination of Hip-hop, funk, and electronic dance music, we highlight important issues facing the modern world.

Though the project is still very much in its early stages and there is no current release date for our body of work, I’m excited and confident in our ability to shift the tide of popular music in a creative and informative new direction.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Man, I don’t know that this is necessarily my favorite, but I am particularly fond of memories I have as a child riding in the car listening to just about everything the radio can throw at me. Some of those trips I still take to this day, and do nothing but listen to music the entire way.
