Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Uchiyama.
Lisa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In the mist of the pandemic, I wanted to make a difference by helping people stay healthy and safe. My boyfriend and friend both asked me if I was making masks and it dawned on me that this was just the thing for me! The first set of masks were created from my personal supply of materials. The demand for my masks ballooned from 23 to 300 orders within three weeks. Customers loved the fabric and the fit. It was so rewarding to hear how my creation was making a difference. Through word of mouth, my business was started.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If was a challenging road ahead since the high demand far exceeded my initial expectation. Purchasing all the materials needed, along with completing the orders in a timely manner, was a struggle. With support from my boyfriend, I was able to get the job done, knowing how important it was for each individual to receive a protective mask.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Kimm Ono Face Mask story. Tell us more about the business.
Kimm Ono is a company built on the philosophy of being comfortable, practical, and unique. The designs provide a feeling of freedom, which allows the customer to embrace the fit. The fabrics are durable and washable, which makes it a practical garment that can be worn often. The fashionable designs reflect it’s own personality and presentation.
I am proud that this company provides a fashionable alternative to a basic pandemic necessity. These masks are artistic in nature and add a sense of flair. It is my hope that when customers wear a Kimm Ono mask, they feel protected, confident, and proud. This is what sets my product apart from the others.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The role of luck has greatly impacted my business. Two days before I was laid off from my job as a technical designer and pattern maker for a large toy company, it was suggested that I start creating my own masks due to the pandemic. I feel so lucky to have friends who believed in my creativity enough to encourage me to design my own mask.
