Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Lipton.
Hi Lisa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I didn’t go into psychology to save the world. I went because I was curious about the human condition. Before that, I spent nearly 20 years in the mortgage business, including the early 2000s. During the housing crash, a transaction from that era eventually led to a federal conviction almost ten years later. By then, I had already gone back to school, earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology, and was halfway through my doctorate. The timing was, objectively, terrible.
After completing my sentence, I returned to school, finished my doctorate, and then spent several years appealing licensing board decisions and completing additional requirements. The process was long, expensive, and persistence was required. I am now licensed as an LMFT in California and Texas, and as a psychologist in Texas.
Clinically, I worked in forensic psychology for years, where my own experience proved invaluable when working with formerly incarcerated individuals with co occurring mental health and substance use disorders. That work eventually led me to substance use treatment, which I love for its honesty and complexity.
I am currently opening Changes Wellness Center, a detoxification and residential treatment program in Northridge. I also spent the last five years teaching master’s and doctoral students as an adjunct at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
I didn’t come to psychology out of advocacy. Life gave me a very immersive research experience. I don’t frame my story as redemption. I frame it as persistence.
If nothing else, I’m very good at finishing what I start.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The California licensing boards presented the most significant challenge. Their framework does not meaningfully account for rehabilitation or achievement, and the combined financial burden and compliance requirements of probation create barriers that few people can realistically overcome
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
