Meet Lee and Nechama Chernotsky of Rosies Foundation in Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee and Nechama Chernotsky.

ROSIES was an incredible dream that came true.

Lee Chernotsky had the vision of taking a “short bus” and making it the first-ever ADA accessible food truck. Our diverse abilities have curated an organizational culture of ACCESS > excess. This culture is the foundation of growth, of efficiency, and the long term impact – of ROSIES Foundation, fueled by the visionary philanthropic initiative taken by Jeffrey and Leann Sobrato.

The bus has become more than just an ice cream truck. Our work together has made wherever we take the Bus a place where individuals learn, work, and grow together! We believe that everyone needs a first job with a reasonable learning curve, and we believe sustainable employment can start with us and grow within our network. ROSIES is a family-oriented organization run by a husband and wife dynamic duo, Lee (eccentric founder) and Nechama Chernotsky. They are raising their three children with the understanding that every person is unique and it is important to celebrate and encourage those diverse abilities within each other.

ROSIES has evolved over the past four years from idea of the bus to creating HirEd an apprenticeship program – and POP! a social enterprise of ROSIES where we provide employment opportunities.

Has it been a smooth road?
Define smooth road?

ROSIES stands for (Removing Obstacles, Supporting Initiative, Employing Solutionaries) Together, we have gone through a lot of life in past four years. Some incredible moments and some very challenging. The greatest moments of learning have come from overcoming challenges together as a crew and support each other in meaningful ways. We have been through it all and looking forward to talking in person about these challenges.

We’d love to hear more about your organization.
ROSIES is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to help people with disabilities access meaningful work. We do this by focusing on diverse abilities to develop and professional growth opportunities.

HirEd! is our eight weeks apprenticeship program focuses on building professional and personal skills for attaining meaningful employment. With an emphasis on peer-to-peer collaboration, apprentices develop teamwork, accountability, and communication skills as they support one another in applying for, obtaining and retaining market-wage jobs.

POP! is the social enterprise arm of ROSIES. POP! provides crew members (former apprentices) with purpose-driven opportunities for employment, both in-house and across industries. For example, we helped convert an ADA school bus into a food truck that is available for hire for special events.

We have grown through the experiences of the individuals who have gone through our training, workforce development and who are either employed through ROSIES or have moved on to gainful employment which is the deeply bittersweet.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
ROSIES thrives on education on accessibility. We provide workshops focusing on accessibility in the workplace, retail outlets, and community you live in. There will always be room for improvement but Los Angeles is a vibrant city and if you’re doing good business it’s always a good place and idea!
