Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Vila.
Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At the age of 17, I graduated from the Dance Conservatory of Valencia with honors in the disciplines of classical dance, Spanish dance, and Flamenco. I then moved to Madrid to dance professionally in classical Spanish dance and Flamenco. In 2010, I moved to the United States and became a soloist dancer in the production of Battle of the Dance in Anaheim. I collaborated with several companies as the principal dancer in “El Amor Brujo” and “Nana Del Caballo Grande.” During my career, I’ve participated in countless performances around the world, dancing with several Spanish dance companies. I have performed in the “tablaos,” as a soloist dancer in the famous Flamenco vs. Celtic show “Battle of the Dance” in Las Vegas and Anaheim. Just before my move to Southern California, I was a finalist in Spain’s Ballet Nacional de España, where I performed as a guest dancer. Now I’m teaching in Dana Point and performing with my Laviva Flamenco group and developing a non-profit project scheduled to launch in 2020.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With every move to a new country, there is a mountain of challenges to face with language barriers and culture shock. But I was amazed at how this country receives me with open arms and unconditional love, admiration, and respect for my culture, my art, and what I do. It’s incredible to witness how other parts of the world admire Spanish culture. I’m so honored to share it here where I’ve made my home with my family.
Please tell us about Laviva Flamenco.
Laviva Flamenco classes range from very young kids to adults of all ages. I specialized in Spanish/Flamenco dance under the teaching and guidance of some of the greatest maestros I’ve ever met. Dance is more than a technique or choreography. It’s a way of life. It’s a way to express yourself and share part of your culture and life experiences. I’m
very proud of all the people who are by my side every day helping and supporting Laviva. I couldn’t ask for better students as well. Laviva Flamenco can transport you to the heart of Spain with movements and audience participation. Because a show, performance, or class is not just music or steps. It’s an essence, experience, and energy that lets you be free, inspired, and full of magic.
What were you like growing up?
I always grew up admiring my maestros. While I love the art of my teachers and mentors, I felt incredibly blessed to find they were also amazing humans. I always reflect on my mentor Maribel Gallardo, a teacher at Ballet Nacional de España. She taught me what it means to be a complete artist with a strong work ethic. She also showed me that it was possible to succeed in your art and your private life. Her example taught me how to raise a family and be a good neighbor and friend. Since I had wonderful mentors who taught me with love and dedication, I want to do the same for my students. I want to share the skills, passion, and magic, which was instilled in me by my teachers and mentors — what better gift than to share what we love.
