Meet Cristina Versteegh of LangoKids Irvine in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Versteegh.

Cristina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
LangoKids Irvine is a language academy in Irvine, CA. We teach French and Spanish following the Immersion Approach therefore, no English is used and the language is taught holistically to kids ages 2 to 10. I started working for the person who owned LangoKids Irvine in the first place. She wasn’t an educator. Doing what we do, you do need to have an educational background even if you know very little about how to manage an educational organization. I am an educator and hold several degrees (Bachelor in Modern Language Teaching, a Specialization in Bilingual Education and a Master of Arts in English and Literature) but I knew nothing of how to administer a business. Because of the past administration, the business’ reputation was very low and the owner owed money and classes to the customers. The owner had already mentioned to me that she saw I was the perfect fit to run a business like this, but I was fearful and inexperienced. My husband encouraged me and so I jumped and acquired the business and with it, a pretty bad reputation and a very low level of trust in the community. I was able to turn things around by bringing in all those dissatisfied customers to try classes with me at no charge. They became my biggest asset. I started with 5 students, one of which was my son. Now, our reputation is really high and I have about 200 registrations every 10 weeks and I cater to 70 kids a week for seven weeks every summer. I worked hard to offer the best materials and classes a language school can offer and I also work with the parents of the kids we tutor to make sure they not only understand the process but also get involved in it. On the administration side, I have gone to classes and workshops, read a lot of books on business and staff management, joined networking organizations to spread the word about what we do and feel now very equipped to operate and direct this organization. I have established a really good name four our business and people prefer us because of our quality inside and outside the class, and our philosophy of love and care for each and every one of our students and families. I believe that every child can and should learn a second or third language and that it’s all possible when you present the language in a structured yet fun way, and when parents and students see how experienced, passionate, and committed I am.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with LangoKids Irvine – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
