Meet LaMeisha Davis of The Divinity Room in Inglewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaMeisha Davis.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I learned how to do hair at a very young age because both of my parents served in the U.S. Navy, so I was blessed to be able to move frequently as a kid and the babysitters I had were hairstylists. These women, two close family friends, were very influential during my childhood. They taught me how to do hair by the time I was ten years old and continued to help mold me into an even better stylist as I got older. By the time I got to high school, I was very close to being obsessed with everything in the beauty world. I joined the cheer leading team and my passion secretly grew as I did all the girls’ hair and makeup for the games we cheered at, and I was starting to get the hang of it, too.

After high school, I found myself doing the route that my teachers, guidance counselors, and my mother were encouraging me to do because of my excellent grades. So I started my pre-medical field track at a four year university in Richmond, Virginia in hopes of being a surgeon when I hit the ripe age of 60+ years old. During this time in my life I did a lot of soul searching because even though I was thriving on the outside, deep down I knew I wasn’t my happiest and that I could reach even higher for myself. After visiting California for a spring break, I made the decision to choose me first. It took months of planning, but I did it. I moved to California and pursued my cosmetology license. I had to believe in myself and my dreams because they’re huge. Sometimes they seriously scare me, but I know my why now.

I want to focus on helping girls and women realize the beauty in the health of their hair rather than just its length. In today’s culture, there’s so many campaigns, songs, and commercials pushing long, beautiful hair, as if having long hair makes your hair beautiful. Which isn’t always the case. I’m guilty of letting pop culture get to younger me and begging my mother to relax my hair even though I didn’t need it. It was a long hard road of the creamy crack, but I came out on top with beautiful healthy curls that I never knew I loved until I nourished them and saw them flourish. I believe truly beautiful hair is healthy hair and length will come when we stop worrying about it. Beautiful hair is not directly related to relaxed hair, straightened hair, or even a loose textured curl pattern. It’s the health of your own crown that pushes any hairstyle, any cut, any color, and even your outfit to stand out in the crowd. And me being a performance dancer at heart, standing out in the crowd makes anyone smile and feel their most beautiful inside and out. That’s what it’s all about.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not completely smooth what so ever. I had ups and downs. Firstly, even realizing that I had to change and question my mindset was probably and still currently the most difficult thing or the most challenging thing to do. Then it was the challenge of explaining my new headspace to my loved ones, actually following through with my plan, and staying true to myself through it all. And my plan changed many times from big events to small details but the vision stayed the same. Doing homework and sleeping in my car was hard. It took tons of discipline to get through it on top.

Please tell us about The Divinity Room.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started my journey sooner!
