Meet Kyra Hurlbut and Brendan Sweeney of Lost Objects

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Hurlbut. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Kyra Hurlbut

Let’s dive into the story of Lost Objects and how it all began. Meet Kyra Hurlbut, an actor with a knack for navigating the social media landscape, having spent three years as the social media manager over at Filmmakers Academy. You might know them for their impressive 800+ hours of educational content and global community of filmmakers.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Enter Brendan Sweeney, a talented producer and director, not just a colleague, but the co-pilot in Kyra’s journey through both life and business.

Back in the days of Filmmakers Academy, no one could have predicted the love story that was about to unfold. Brendan, fresh from a turbulent divorce, and Kyra found themselves swept up in each other’s worlds. But that’s just the prelude.

As their love story deepened, so did an idea. Kyra had been receiving signals from fellow filmmakers and businesses in need of social media expertise. Yet, time was an elusive resource, and Kyra had to turn them away. Then, like a guiding star, Kyra’s father suggested, “Why not start your own social media venture and bring in freelancers?” An intriguing proposition, but the intricacies of starting a business were daunting at the time.

Enter Brendan. Kyra casually floated the business idea to him, and he leaped at the opportunity. They both recognized the significance of carving a niche in the industry. Their mission? To support filmmakers and businesses in thriving within the digital landscape, forging a robust online presence.

Brendan took charge of the creative and business aspects – from logo design to selecting the company’s distinctive colors, creating contracts, and crafting a stellar website. Kyra, on the other hand, delved into the world of existing social media agencies, gaining insights into their strategies and platform preferences.

Their journey began in January, with Kyra and Brendan diligently laying the foundation for Lost Objects. By July, they officially opened their doors for business, and the response was astonishing – five clients came aboard almost immediately. Lost Objects is a testament to the extraordinary potential unlocked when passion and collaboration intertwine.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building a business is never easy. It’s something that you dream about, but the reality can seem so different. We embarked on this journey as naive new business owners, eager to make our mark in the world of social media management. Little did we know that the path ahead would be filled with unexpected challenges and valuable lessons.

As we ventured into the realm of social media management, we found ourselves having to teach ourselves the intricacies of new platforms constantly evolving in the digital landscape. It was a humbling experience, realizing that no matter how much we planned, there would always be something new to learn.

One of the most significant obstacles we faced was learning from our mistakes with our initial clients. In our eagerness to succeed, we sometimes stumbled, and not every project went as smoothly as we hoped. But what we’ve come to appreciate is that these early missteps were essential for our growth. Embracing failure and celebrating it as much as the successes became a cornerstone of our journey.

Impatience was another challenge we had to confront. We wanted to see immediate results for our clients and ourselves. But building a sustainable business takes time, and we had to learn the art of patience, perseverance, and strategic planning.

Stress easily became our unwelcome companion during the early days. The pressure of managing clients, deadlines, and the day-to-day operations of Lost Objects was intense. Overcoming this meant developing resilience and finding effective ways to manage stress.

In retrospect, these challenges have been instrumental in shaping Lost Objects into what it is today. They’ve made us more malleable, adaptable, and resilient as business owners. We’ve learned that building a business isn’t just about achieving success; it’s about navigating the obstacles and growing through them. It’s about embracing failure as an opportunity to learn and celebrating every step of the journey, no matter how small.

In the world of social media management, where the digital landscape is ever-changing, being professional yet relatable is the key. We’ve evolved, not just as business owners, but as individuals who understand the nuances of this industry. And as we continue to navigate this dynamic field, we’re committed to delivering top-notch social media solutions while always remaining approachable and relatable to our clients. Lost Objects is more than just a business; it’s a testament to our resilience, adaptability, and the enduring spirit of entrepreneurship.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
We opened up after the COVID-19 crisis but have had to operate in this unstable economy and time of inflation. As young people living in Los Angeles, it is very hard to make money stretch. We’ve had to learn about the importance of investing in ourselves and this business. We haven’t taken a single paycheck from the business as of yet and continue investing back into Lost Objects. When you build a business, you have to be prepared to work for free and find ways to make it work.
