Meet Kristin Muckley of Closet Therapy in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Muckley.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Whenever I was stressed out or overwhelmed I would clean out my closet. I noticed that as long as my closet was in order, I felt I could handle whatever challenges were thrown my way.

Organizing my closet made me feel in control, focused, and gave me a sense of clarity. I figured that if this coping mechanism was working for me, there had to be other women out there who could also benefit from decluttering and closet organization. By combining my training as a therapist and my growing obsession with cleaning out closets, I created Closet Therapy in order to offer this service to others.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle of starting my own business is that I knew nothing about business. I was a mental health professional who saw the connection between emotional baggage and physical clutter, but I was clueless when it came to finance, accounting, technology, marketing, advertising, etc. It’s been a steep learning curve and I think I’ve tapped into every friendship to request their help along the way.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Closet Therapy story. Tell us more about the business.
There are plenty of closet organizers out there, but I think what makes my business different is my background as a therapist. It’s not just about getting rid of old clothes and making your closet look fabulous, but also understanding the reasons why we do certain things. Some people have difficulty letting go of items they’ll never use because of the meaning attached to them. Some people have a tendency to over shop when they’re feeling lonely, depressed, bored, and are trying to fill a void. When we uncover the root of the problem, we can then change the behavior.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see people becoming more open to the idea of minimalism and living with less stuff, especially as people are living more mobile lifestyles.
