Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Mason.
Krista, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I was young I’ve always felt a need to connect with people.
When I was seven I wanted to help kids (like myself) going through family dilemmas by becoming a therapist. At 12, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. My goal was to become a restaurant owner who catered to diabetics. As time went on, I continued to change, as did my dreams.
While born and raised in Southern California, it wasn’t until attending junior year of high school in Snohomish, WA trying to find myself that my dream career became a realization. I remember sitting in my first photography class and it happened – everything made sense, everything was clear…THIS was how I was going to connect with those around me on a level that I never could before.
I knew without a doubt I wanted to photograph people.
I wanted to capture what they were feeling, help them see themselves in a different light, make them feel beautiful and look amazing. The moment they smiled or shared a laugh or look of love – that’s what it was all about. Capturing their genuine beauty is what fired me up and it still does.
From that moment on, I was officially on the way to becoming a visual storyteller.
The first photography company I worked for specialized in weddings and my love for photographing people grew deeper. Nothing gets me more excited than watching a couple transform a space to their dream wedding surrounded by family and friends to celebrate their love.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been twenty-plus years of learning life lessons (fearfully investing in workshops and mentors), of crafting my skill and finding myself.
I am always learning more either about myself or my business. No day is the same and it is a roller coaster for sure, but one I want to ride to the end.
The business and clients are always changing and I am always juggling what the next move will be. When I first started my business, I was so set in my ways and didn’t want to change anything. I quickly learned that to succeed I had to be open and willing to change and grow. That has been one of my biggest personal accomplishments, my growth and willingness to change or adapt. Now every day I am looking for influencers, mentors, speakers and any education I can get to help my business grow as well as myself. I will be honest sometimes I feel like that sucker that will buy anything like I am that eskimo buying ice.
I started as an artist with a passion for photography and had to learn the business side of things along the way. I am still learning the business and marketing on a daily basis as well as always improving my craft. Some days feel like a string of constant struggles and lows and some days feel like I am on top of the world and can accomplish anything. I think this is a common feeling amongst entrepreneurs. There are so many ups and downs, highs and lows of running your own business and constantly trying to grow to the next level. I have personally found the trick is to stay focused and grateful for where you are, look back and see how far you have come and know that each day you are improving.

I am not sure what the future holds, but my goal is to continue to live my passion of photographing people and their stories.
