Meet Khoa Nguyen of Khoa Nguyen Photography in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khoa Nguyen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been interested in art and as a kid I would spend a lot of time drawing. The few classes that I actually enjoyed in high school were art classes. My journey through photography didn’t begin till my daughter was born. I wanted to take pictures of her so I bought an entry DSLR and we would take it everywhere. The more photos I took, the more I wanted to get better. I started to subscribe to photography magazines, watch YouTube videos, and practiced. When my daughter was two, I took a break due to demand from my previous retail job. I left retail two years ago and decided to pursue a career in photography and that’s when I actually start living.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to entrepreneurship is not a smooth one but it was very enjoyable for me. I knew how to take photos but I needed to learn how to run my own business. That took a lot of time from family and till this day I am still trying to balance family and business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Khoa Nguyen Photography – what should we know?
I am an event base photographer who specializes in weddings. The one thing I am truly proud of are the relationships I have built with my clients and being in retail for over 8 years helped with that. Being unique in the wedding industry is extremely hard and I knew the only way to do it was to focus on making the experience better for my clients rather than try to make my images look like no one else. I wanted to make the whole booking of a wedding photographer easier for my clients so I would spend a lot of time with them and give them a chance to know me. Once I get a call from a client, we would schedule a consultation meeting. During the consultation meeting, I would do a quick mini session and edit a couple photos right after. This way they could see my workflow and know what they’re going to get. My engagements are 2 to 3 hours long, we would shoot then take a break grab some food sit down and talk before we start shooting again. By the time of the wedding everyone is on the same page because we had spent so much time together. I’ll be real, I don’t even charge by the hours, it’s just based on the event I’m doing. I believe that one of the best things you can give anyone is your time.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I definitely did not get here alone. When my daughter was born, that’s the day I found my purpose in life. My girlfriend Madeline has never let me give up and continue to push me to become better every day. My mentors who walk me through the road of entrepreneurship and give me to tools I needed to be a successful entrepreneur. My florist Carlos Cortez who inspired to focus on every single detail of a wedding. My photography partner John Nguyen, who have shot countless wedding with me and taught me all the technical things you need know. And finally, every single client that have giving me the opportunity to do what I love for a living.
