Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Palafox.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello, my name is Kevin Palafox, and I’m the owner of Pal-of-a-Fox Team Building Workshops. I’m also a teacher and actor, born and raised in Mid City, Los Angeles. My journey started when I began studying acting in the Bay Area, eventually moving back to LA to pursue TV and film. Along the way, I joined an improv group called The Chocolate Churros, and that experience changed everything.
After one of our shows, an audience member approached me and said she had never laughed so much. She asked if I would be willing to teach an improv workshop at her company to help their team loosen up, communicate better, and have fun. In true improv fashion, I said yes—even though I had no idea how to approach a corporate workshop. After pushing past the overthinking, I created a course that ended up being a huge success. Employees came out of their shells, took creative risks, and connected in ways they hadn’t before. Several even joked that their bosses needed the workshop more than they did.
That first workshop led to a second request—this time for a stand-up comedy session. I had never done stand-up, but I realized I didn’t have to do it alone. I brought in a talented comedian friend to lead the session, took a stand-up class myself to learn the craft, and co-instructed the workshop. Again, it was a hit. People were onstage, laughing, performing, and surprising themselves.
From there, the ideas kept growing. I began developing more workshops: smartphone filmmaking competitions, sneaker design battles, boxing fitness, aromatherapy, cocktail and mocktail creation, candle making, cake design, wood burning, and dozens more. What started as one improv workshop has now become a catalog of over 55 team-building experiences.
At first, I taught most workshops myself—both live and virtual. But everything shifted when a client asked for four workshops happening at the same time. I realized I couldn’t clone myself, so I tapped into my network of creative, outgoing actor friends. We delivered the event flawlessly, which led to another request—this time eight workshops running simultaneously. That became a turning point. I now oversee a team of talented facilitators, and we’ve built a reputation for creating energetic, collaborative, joyful environments where people can step away from work and try something new for a few hours.
And that’s how Pal-of-a-Fox grew—from one improv workshop to a full-scale team-building company built on creativity, community, and saying “yes” to opportunities even before I fully knew how I’d pull them off.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road that led me here was completely unexpected. I had no idea that hosting workshops and team-building events was even an industry. I sort of stumbled into it and honestly wasn’t sure whether it would last beyond my first couple of workshops. But over time, I slowly built a catalog of experiences based on my interests, my clients’ interests, and anything that sounds fun or creative.
Like many entrepreneurs, one of my biggest struggles early on was understanding my own value. When you truly enjoy what you do, it’s hard to put a price on it—because it doesn’t feel like work. I didn’t know what to charge, and every time I shared pricing, I found myself hoping I wasn’t offending anyone. Eventually, I had to learn to appreciate my time, effort, and the value my workshops bring to a team.
There were also moments when I’d run a workshop and barely make any profit, or even lose money, because I underestimated supply costs, instructor fees, preparation time, or the impact of last-minute client changes. Undercharging and over accommodating taught me the importance of clear boundaries and accurate pricing—not just for sustainability, but for respecting the work behind each event.
Another challenge was staffing. In rare cases (but it did happen), an instructor wouldn’t show up, and my backup plan was… me. That worked a few times, but it made me realize how vulnerable the business was. What if I was already leading another workshop? Or didn’t have the specific skill set the event required? That’s not a scalable model. I learned only on that I was just an employee in my own business. A lot of lessons are constantly learned every day and I’m grateful for them.
Those experiences pushed me to build a strong, reliable team—fun, charismatic instructors who genuinely enjoy working with people. I’ve learned that I can’t do everything on my own, and bringing in talented team members has not only improved the quality of our workshops but has also helped me grow as a leader. Now I have people whose strengths complement mine, inspire me and who take responsibilities off my plate so I can focus on expanding the business.
It hasn’t always been smooth, but every challenge has shaped the company for the better. And the more we grow, the more fun and meaningful the work becomes.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Pal-of-a-Fox?
Pal-of-a-Fox is really the intersection of all the experiences I’ve had—acting, teaching, sales, marketing, and constantly speaking and performing in front of people. All of those pieces came together to form this business. While we’re known as a team-building company, I like to think of us as a people-building company. Whether someone joins a denim or hoodie customization workshop, a cake design challenge, or a LEGO competition, they walk out smiling, having tapped into their creative, expressive side—even if just for a couple of hours. Our mission is simple: create spaces where people can have fun, connect, and discover something new about themselves.
One of the things that sets Pal-of-a-Fox apart is our versatility. We don’t limit ourselves to one type of workshop—we thrive on variety. If a client doesn’t know what they want, we figure it out together. We can put a twist on an existing workshop, or create something brand new from scratch. The business is always evolving, and that keeps me and my team inspired. Some of our best workshops are born from improvisation and collaboration.
Beyond the fun, many of our workshops have allowed us to give back—donating animal supplies to shelters, school supplies to underserved schools in Los Angeles, and toys and gifts to families during the holidays. Being able to extend the impact beyond the event itself is something I’m really proud of.
Looking ahead, one of my biggest goals is expanding into youth programs. I want to use these workshops to introduce kids to new skills and spark ideas for future careers. Whether it’s sneaker design battles where students turn blank shoes into their own brand, iPhone filmmaking where they shoot and screen a mini-movie in two hours, or cake decorating that reveals an unexpected artistic talent—these workshops can be a gateway. They can awaken interests, build confidence, and show people of all ages that they have abilities they never knew they had.
At its heart, Pal-of-a-Fox is about joy, creativity, and human connection. We create moments that leave people energized, proud, and inspired—and that’s what makes this work so meaningful.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m pretty much an open book, but people are often surprised to learn that I’m a working SAG-AFTRA actor. I don’t talk about it much, but acting has been a big passion of mine for years, and I truly love the craft. It led me to where I am now.
Something else many people don’t realize is how many different creative paths I’ve explored. I’ve worked as an assistant stylist for an incredible stylist, been a buyer for sneaker and clothing brands, started a clothing brand and teach STEAM programs to TK–5th graders. I’m always learning, always creating, and I love diving into new skills—it keeps me growing and inspired.
And on a personal note, my son keeps me on my toes in the best way. He brings so much joy and is a huge source of inspiration in everything I do.
