Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerttu Karon.
Kerttu, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m originally from Estonia, where the population is only 1.3 million people. I like to call myself truly one in a million. 🙂 I graduated Estonian University of Life Sciences with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree. During my university years, I was introduced to an American company, Southwestern Advantage, where I started selling educational books door to door. I did this for six summers in six different states working 12 hours a day, six days a week. I felt very proud being a part of Southwestern. They gave me the tools to self motivate, work hard and that “no means next”. This mentality comes in handy during my auditioning process as an actress. During that time I was making good money, which led me to my first “adult” big moment, where at just only 19 years old I got to take my mom to Italy for her birthday. Paying for it all myself made me really proud to give back to my deserving mother.
After a few years with the company, during my third year studying I found myself missing something, I felt how my love of acting was calling me to go and live my fullest potential. I have always performed since I could remember. I’ve acted, I’ve sang, I’ve danced and was involved with all the organization’s school-related. Being a student body president, spokesperson and the host for all events gave me confidence to be adaptive in any circumstances. So I knew if I wanted to truly give myself a fair chance I had to come to Los Angeles, the land of opportunities. It all started off in New York Film Academy studying acting for film where I finally understood that this is my place. I felt I belong here with all this free creative energy in the city.
With little to no money and no family I decided to move to California. Now I am a full-time actress living my dream. I have been casted in several feature films and commercials. I am very excited to be part of a new feature film where I will be working as an actress and a producer. My goal is to make people feel, truly feel. The stage gives me freedom like nothing else. I know this is my calling and my destiny. I see myself accepting an oscar for the best actress standing at the podium thanking my mom, who is my biggest inspiration.
Has it been a smooth road?
Rarely ever it’s a smooth road for anybody. I definitely have had my hardships. One of the biggest struggles is that all of my family is back home in Estonia; my support system is far from me physically. That is truly what motivates me which encourages me to continue to strive for greatness and be the best version of myself. Moving to Los Angeles has its struggles when it comes to meeting like-minded individuals who share common interest. Thankfully I have found that with my amazing acting class and also my hot yoga community. I am so grateful that I have found a new family here in the city of angels. The second challenge in Los Angeles is always money. Living here is next level! Most people don’t realize that you have to hustle up 100 percent just to maintain a normal lifestyle. Mostly all actors and creative people have part-time/full-time jobs on the side to support themselves. It’s a must, success takes time! Time and hard work. But I truly believe that with persistence and consistency everything is possible!
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am and always will be an artist, a performer, and an actress! I love everything about the stage, tv and film. My strongest suits are definitely drama and hosting (tv show & red carpet), but now that I moved to Los Angeles I also found my love for comedy and improvisation in Groundlings Theatre. I see myself in the near future building a new emotionally connecting tv show similar to, one of my favorite shows, “This is Us”. I am particularly interested in being casted in two types of genres, romantic storytelling films like “Notebook” and psychological thrillers like “Gone Girl”. What sets me apart from most is how I make you as an audience feel. Energy is essential in this line of work. I have been told that I shine brightest in a room full of stars! But hey, I didn’t say that. With a few years now under my belt I expeditiously grown to be my most vulnerable while performing and truly connecting with my scene partners. We should all strive to live truthfully in the moment.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I absolutely LOVE that Los Angeles has such a beautiful wide range of cultures together. I feel like anybody is welcomed with all of their talents, doesn’t matter what race or sexual preference you have. You can be your truest you. I also like the fact that LA is very health conscious city as is Estonia. I always picked my own potatoes and berries from my grandmas garden since I remember. Now I have chosen to be a full vegan for the love of animals.
The least I like how there is such a range of the super rich and absolutely poor homeless people. I had never seen such a huge cap in between peoples lifestyles. But what I’m grateful for is the fact that it makes you see the bigger picture, that you CAN have more, a more beautiful bigger life surrounded my all you have ever desired.
