Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenetia Lee.

Kenetia Lee is the Founder and CEO of PopUP CleanUP, a niche commercial cleaning company that provides top-tier cleaning crews, trash management rentals, and landfill diversion strategies to high-energy events including festivals, races, branding activations, and concerts. PopUP services events in multiple major cities across the United States from Los Angeles to Miami. Under her leadership, PopUP CleanUP has achieved consistent revenue growth, driven by her “everyone wins” management philosophy and ability to foster pride and excellence within her team. Her sharp eye for order and aesthetics ensures client satisfaction at every job site, making her an indispensable partner in the events world.

Hailing from Chicago, Kenetia was strongly influenced by her grandmother who worked in residential cleaning and her mother who was a director at Mary Kay. She attended Elmhurst University where she majored in Interdepartmental Communications with an emphasis in Marketing. Before launching PopUP CleanUP, Kenetia made her mark as a celebrity makeup artist on the red carpet at the Grammy’s, at the Miss Universe pageant, and at E! Premieres across town. She has long been a champion of women’s empowerment, inspiring audiences nationwide to embrace their unique beauty through her book, Fearless Beauty 360°: A Complete Guide to Self-Acceptance and Empowerment. Kenetia has spoken with women’s organizations across the U.S. Her journey from backstage beauty expert to event-ready cleaning professional highlights her unique perspective on aesthetics and organization.

Kenetia was chosen as one of the speakers for Catersource 2025 in Fort Lauderdale, where PopUP CleanUP gave a presentation on how to produce a net zero and zero waste event based on their Sustainable Event Guide available for free on PopUP’s company website. Now, as the host of the podcast Celebrate and Chill, Kenetia brings her industry experience and passion for creating impactful events to a new platform, where she connects with event producers and professionals in experiential marketing to explore the art and business of celebration.

In her spare time, Kenetia hikes, practices yoga, and moonlights as a valet to her very vocal cat. Her personal philosophy is “GO FOR IT! I’LL EITHER LEARN OR GROW FROM IT.”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is NEVER a smooth road. As with most cleaning providers, we’ve experienced common struggles such as occasional bad apples when hiring staff, challenging client interactions when the scope of work changes or unrealistic expectations are not met, and contending with occasional venue issues such as plumbing disasters and confetti from a gender reveal blowing onto neighboring property due to wind. However, the biggest challenge we’ve faced as a company is COVID-19. The shutdown completely decimated our business since events disappeared. During that time we hustled for grants and loans, pivoted to real estate cleanings and disinfection services for essential workspaces, and restructured our business to come out stronger post-pandemic.

As you know, we’re big fans of PopUP CleanUP. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
PopUP CleanUP is an event cleaning company headquartered in Los Angeles. Our core competence is providing event cleaning before, during, and after large scale events from 150 to over 30,000 people and for event venues with an emphasis on customer service and craftsmanship. Our services include pre-event cleaning, live event porters, restroom attendants, trash management and separation, post-event cleaning, trash can, recycling bin, and dumpster rentals, power washing, window washing, carpet extraction and floor strip and wax detailing, oil recycling (in some areas), and food recovery /donation services.

We have experience on a wide range of projects from branding activations to fashion galas, awards shows, sporting competitions, food festivals, block parties, and events occurring at multiple locations simultaneously. We help event planners implement landfill diversion strategies and sustainable practices to reduce their environmental footprint.

Past events serviced have included Nike branding events for the NBA and MLB All-Star Games, the NAACP Awards, multi-location activations for Amazon Foods, several California Nurses Association rallies at the Sacramento Mall, One805’s Maroon 5 Concert for first responders, and several football clinics around the 2022 Super Bowl. PopUP CleanUP is a member of the LA Business Connect program, formerly the NFL Business Connect program, one of 225 diverse businesses chosen to bid on contracts surrounding the Rams-Bengals 2022 championship.

What sets us apart from others is our customer service. We don’t live behind a digital wall; we pride ourselves on being accessible by phone and zoom to all our clients and welcome pre-production meetings so that we can work out all the troubleshooting and kinks before their event goes live. We attend trade shows and conferences to learn about what’s new in our industry, and keep up on new technology, materials, and services intended to improve the sustainable footprint of events.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
My philosophy is that your net worth is related to your network. Because of my network, I once went from being kicked out of a room in Long Beach where I was paying $200 a month to living in a penthouse in New York City where I then lived for the next two years. I attribute that to my faith and my community, which I have worked hard to build and which has helped my business thrive coming out of lean Covid times.

All the luck happens when you show up to networking events, have a company come across your social media post and save the information months later for their event, or from speaking up at a conference and asking a crazy question only to have the person who can connect you with our dream client come to find you at the end of the lecture.
