Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Ramirez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always loved photography. During high school, people always told me photography wasn’t a realistic career. I went on to college and studied other subjects, but couldn’t shake the desire to chase my dream as being a professional photographer. Two weeks after I graduated from school I threw caution to the wind and moved to LA to give it a shot.
Flash forward three years, I am completely self-employed, shooting a mix of wedding + travel photography. I am currently working on a few humanitarian projects and would like to delve into the world of photo journalism.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey into photography has been a continuously evolving one. I think being self-employed challenges your dedication to the art and your dreams, and sometimes it can be difficult. There will always be (at least) a few bumps in the road, especially in the beginning. The key to success is not letting those hang ups discourage you because ultimately every mistake is a learning experience, and with hard work, anything is possible.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kayla Lilli Photography – what should we know?
My company specializes in natural light, documentary style photography. I shoot primarily 35mm, and am working towards developing my own film. I am most proud of being able to share my voice through a medium that I love, and that people dig it.
I try to stay true to my vision, instead of going along with the trends. I like to think breaking a few rules here and there and not being afraid to be authentic sets me apart.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I couldn’t attribute my success without mentioning my cousin, Laura. She is a super talented photographer, and took me under her wing when I moved to LA. We shoot weddings together, and she taught me the ins and outs of the business. I am so grateful for her help, and for the opportunity to work + travel with someone I love!
