Today, we’d like to introduce you to Juan Antonio Gomez Vazques.
Hi Juan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Spring Valley, California, with my mom and 4 siblings. My mom Ninfa being a single mother and raising 5 kids all 2-3 years apart wasn’t the easiest thing so we moved around a lot bouncing for house to house.
Growing up, you never realize how hard times are until you get older and look back at everything you went through. Then, you almost appreciate where you are now even more. At around the age of 7, we lived in a trailer park, and the school we went to at the time had a program where they were able to give us free cable for our TV.
I instantly got addicted and specifically remember getting hooked on all the Disney shows. “I want to hangout out with them,” I told my oldest brother as I pointed at The Suite Life on Deck playing on the T.V. He then broke the news and told me that they’re just actors and the boat is a set made of wood…pretty much changing my life forever. From that point on, I developed my mindset of being an actor. Originally, my dream was just to be on a Disney show, and as I got older, I fell in love with the craft, and now I feel the need to pursue this path.
I think that’s because I had set my mind on this path at a very young age. At the age of 12 I took action and googled how to be on T.V and convinced my mom to take me to this open call audition pretty close to where we lived. She was skeptical about it but we went, auditioned, and got offered to sign with them but I had to pay. We couldn’t afford it at the time so we declined.
I was really hurt & gave up on the dream. Right before going to high school, I asked my mom if I could homeschool myself so I could work and pay for some acting classes, and she told me that if I still wanted to pursue this career next year, then yes.
So, I decided to take theatre while in public high school and loved it. The sophomore year rolled around, and I begged my mom to let me homeschool myself. She finally said yes. I started working, and the next thing I knew, I was taking acting classes with Terry Ross. After a couple of months of attending her classes, the blueprint to pursue this art became clear.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story. Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Honestly, when you set on the career path you chose and TRULY know you’re never going to quit, you almost take all those bumps in the road as, “Right, it’s just part of the process.” By no means am I anywhere near where I want to be, but I’m truly grateful for all of the projects I’ve been able to be a part of.
Struggles like repeated rejection, self-doubt, and loneliness are struggles I feel everyone pursuing something out of the norm goes through. If I get an audition, I pretty much spend the next three days memorizing, rehearsing, and then self-taping it.
Sometimes, you get multiple auditions a week, so you miss out on a lot of the usual day-to-day life. But if you love the hustle and truly see the vision, there’s no stopping, you know.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Since the beginning of my acting journey, I feel as though I’ve gotten very lucky with the people I’ve been able to work with and meet.
I think it’s because of the input/output of work and results. “The harder you work, the luckier you get” is my favorite quote because it’s so true. The project I hold close to my heart that means a lot to me is TOLEDO, written by Alyssa Toledo.
It was the first thing I ever auditioned for and booked. I learned so much from the cast and crew on that set, and it was the first domino, I’d say, to my journey. Since then, I’ve been able to work with people I grew up watching, like members of Faze Clan, Manscaped, and Rayscorruptedmind.
A couple of Student Films, Short Films, and TV pilots later… my first Feature Film, which I’m extremely proud to be a part of, is in the works.
