Meet Joyce Washington of New Sunday Productions / Love the Crew

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Washington.

Joyce Washington

Hi Joyce, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

Hello, my name is Joyce, and I am a Los Angeles native with a rich background in the entertainment industry. Growing up in the vibrant neighborhoods of Watts and Compton, I have always felt a deep connection to the diverse culture and creative energy of LA. My journey in the industry began in the mid-90s at Propaganda Films, where I was able to observe directors like Michael Bay, Antoine Fuqua & David Fincher  in action during set visits.
Starting my career as a production coordinator for commercials and music videos, I quickly discovered my true passion for producing. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to G Thomas Ferguson for taking a chance on me and allowing me to produce my very first music video. This opportunity opened doors for me to work with acclaimed directors such as Tim Story, Bille Woodruff, Jake Nava, and many others. The early 2000s marked the pinnacle of my producing career, especially during the heyday of music videos. Working with BEYONCE will always stand out as the highlights of my career.  Also loved filming in exotic locations like Rio, Dublin, Johannesburg, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica was truly exhilarating. However, the landscape of the music industry shifted with the rise of streaming platforms, prompting me to explore new avenues such as reality tv before ultimately transitioning my focus to independent filmmaking.
In 2019, I had the honor of producing the feature film “IF NOT NOW WHEN,” directed by Tamara Bass and Megan Good.  Currently, as the owner of New Sunday Prods, I am actively involved in developing Film & TV projects in both scripted and unscripted formats. Additionally, I am working on securing financing and distribution for my upcoming film, “SUDDENLY SINGLE”.
As an entrepreneur and creative visionary, I am dedicated to exploring new opportunities and pushing the boundaries of storytelling in the entertainment industry. I am excited about the future and eager to embark on new projects that will continue to inspire and captivate audiences.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. While I have had the opportunity to produce commercials for major brands such as Pepsi, AT&T, and Gatorade, the journey has been far from smooth. As an African American female producer in a predominantly white male industry, I often found myself facing significant obstacles and barriers.
Entering the film world felt like starting from scratch all over again. The common notion that success is solely based on connections and networking proved to be a challenging reality. I firmly believe that it is not just about who you know, but rather about finding individuals who will genuinely support you, be your ally, and open doors for you without hesitation. Building relationships with the right people, those who are willing to advocate for you, has been crucial in navigating the industry.
Grateful that I have been fortunate enough to connect with a few individuals who have truly made a difference in my journey. Their support and mentorship have been invaluable in helping me overcome obstacles and continue to progress in my career.  Building a strong network of trustworthy allies has been essential in my path towards success, and I am grateful for those who have stood by me and supported me along the way.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?

Life is unpredictable and filled with challenges, peaks, and valleys, but if you can be flexible and open to change while holding on to faith, you will reach your goal. Be very clear about what you want in life, right it down, make a realistic plan, and work your plan. I’ve also learned I cannot do this alone… it’s necessary to keep people in your life who will pray with you and for you, offer support, show love, provide constructive criticism, and celebrate your successes. Consult God first on all things , pray and allow Him to lead you on your journey.
