Meet Jorge De Los Rios of Los Angeles, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge De Los Rios

Hi Jorge, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story begins in Puerto Rico. I was born in the city of Caguas to a Puerto Rican mother and a Colombian father. From a very young age, I was interested in communications, art, and entrepreneurship.

I studied communications at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón while simultaneously studying dramatic arts at the Ateneo Puertorriqueño and working as a manager at a men’s clothing store called Almacenes Plaza. I remember how, during that time, I barely slept because I was so busy juggling these three things at once.

After finishing university, I moved to Miami, and after a year and a half, I moved again to Los Angeles, where I have now lived for over 12 years.

In this city, I have lived a thousand lives in one—from epic and meaningful moments to very sad and depressive times when I felt lost and without direction.

Currently, I feel very fortunate to be married to a wonderful woman who sweetens my life with her presence. I work as an account manager at Vista Group, which is a global leader providing software and technology solutions across the film industry sectors of distribution, exhibition, and moviegoers. I have been practicing jiu-jitsu for just 10 months and had the opportunity to compete in my first tournament, where I won a gold medal in my division. Additionally, I enjoy working out and creating content on social media about wellness and social issues.

Lastly, I feel very fortunate to live in this city, where I have had so many experiences, grown, matured, and become the person I am today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My life has been full of ups and downs. From the challenges of learning a new language to the many jobs I’ve had—some with great bosses and others with people who abused their power—and culminating with the death of my father.

Anyone who has left their home country to immigrate to another can agree with me that the challenges are countless. Every day becomes an achievement. Here, we experience our greatest joys and our deepest sorrows at the same time.

And if you were born here in Los Angeles, even then, this city teaches you that only those with a warrior’s heart make it through.

This city is incredibly dynamic and demands that we give 100% every single day.

However, I must confess that once you get used to this city and learn the lessons it has to offer, you end up becoming a much stronger person than the one who first set foot here.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Just as I mentioned at the beginning, from a very young age, I was interested in the arts and communications, especially acting. However, on some occasions, I had to write the dramatic scenes that I would later perform at my school.

Similarly, during my teenage years, I played any role I was invited to perform in the dramatic scenes at my church.

These two experiences pushed me to pursue a professional path as a creator. Whether acting, writing, directing, or producing, I was always passionate about creating. Perhaps because I believe that all human beings are creative entities who need to communicate with one another to make sense of this life.

I was fortunate to be awarded Best Young Actor in Puerto Rico for playing three roles in one in a comedy called Póstumo, a novel adapted by Roberto Ramos Perea and written by the author and father of Puerto Rican literature, Alejandro Tapia y Rivera.

Behind the camera, I have worked on countless projects. For me, the most important factors when deciding whether to work on a project are the story we are going to tell and the team I’ll be working with. I enjoy collaborating on stories that evoke intense emotions in people or make them reflect on our society and their own lives. Additionally, I deeply value having a team of professionals who get along well. You spend long hours working with these people, and in many cases, they become your second family—so it’s important that the drama happens only in front of the cameras, not behind them.

One of the things I have been doing in recent years is creating content for social media. Since my teenage years, I wanted to do this, but it wasn’t until recently that I allowed myself to take action. I think I cared too much about what people thought of me, and that prevented me from creating content earlier. However, stepping into content creation has opened many doors for me—leading to collaborations, podcasts, events, trips, and job opportunities in the Spanish-language communications industry.

Just a few weeks ago, I started from scratch once again, creating content focused on wellness, social issues, and physical activity—incorporating my passion for the gentle art known as jiu-jitsu.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Perhaps this is not a popular opinion, but I really like starting my research or satisfying my curiosity by using artificial intelligence. I use it as a starting point to guide me toward content that discusses the topic I’m interested in learning about.

On the other hand, while I recognize the important role that AI plays in our lives, I believe it’s crucial to balance it with activities outside the internet. Reading a book or writing are activities I enjoy and recommend to others.

Currently, I’m finishing the book 21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari, which dedicates many pages to reflecting on the role of artificial intelligence in our society, along with its potential advantages and risks that we should anticipate.

In conclusion, aside from Harari’s book, I think I simply enjoy searching for information on topics that interest me, regardless of the platform or medium where that information is found.
