Meet Jordan Catapano and Jocelyn Dunn Muhlbach of This Girl Walks Into a Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Catapano and Jocelyn Dunn Muhlbach.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jordan, Jocelyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was failing terribly at breaking into the television and script writing business. When my manager called to say everyone had passed on my horror movie, I decided to forget about show business and write a book about bartending instead since that was the only thing I seemed to be good at!

Night after night during my shifts, women would ask me how I got the job. Selfishly, I was tired of giving the same advice over and over again. After a little research, I realized that no one had ever written a book about how to find a bartending job and bam! A new topic and a fresh outlook at writing had landed in my lap.

I approached my sister, Jocelyn, about designing the book. She’s a talented graphic designer and was perfect for the job. The book, “This Girl Walks Into a Bar: A Women’s Guide to Professional Bartending and Home Mixology” came out right when the craft cocktail scene was hitting nationally. There weren’t, and still aren’t, many female voices in the business, so we filled a void. Our blog, This Girl Walks Into a Bar, took off and so did our book. That’s when we realized that we had more than just a book on our hands: we had a brand.

We built a website, wrote two more books, won some awards, signed on to corporate partnerships, and continued to grow.

Last year we opened up a new division of our business to satisfy all the requests for bartenders: an all-female bartendering service. We now have a staff of beautiful, talented, smart women who can bartend any event.

It’s a very exciting time! And you can definitely expect our own mixer line in the future!

Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part it has been a very smooth road. We’re sisters and best friends and great business partners.

The largest “struggle” was the mistake of hiring a PR firm to help with our 2015 west coast book tour. It was a huge waste of money. What we did learn as entrepreneurs is that you truly are your own best advocate and publicist. We have received the most exposure as a result of our own efforts. When you just pick up the phone, you discover that people really do want to hear your story.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the This Girl Walks Into a Bar story. Tell us more about the business.
This Girl Walks Into a Bar opened their bartending services division in 2016 to provide highly trained, polished, and friendly female bartenders for various events, ranging from intimate dinner parties to extravagant weddings. Their bartenders are recognized for their exemplary customer service and outstanding beverages.

Founded in 2010 by sisters Jordan Catapano and Jocelyn Dunn Muhlbach, This Girl Walks Into a Bar launched as a blog to support the debut of their first book. The brand quickly developed into a successful, multi-faceted business by creating branded recipes and original content and photography for editorial print, social media, and marketing materials.

Jordan and Jocelyn’s books, “This Girl Walks Into a Bar: A Women’s Guide to Professional Bartending and Home Mixology,” “This Girl Minds Her P’s & Q’s: An Etiquette Handbook for Dinner Parties, Restaurants, and Bars,” and “Cocktails for Cougars and Cowgirls: Simple and Delicious Recipes for Every Woman” are available online and at bookstores across the US.

This Girl Walks Into a Bar provides well-trained, friendly, and professional bartenders for a range of events including dinner parties, birthday parties, class parties, pre-market realtor parties, bridal showers, baby showers, company parties, and weddings. Our team can also create mocktails and virgin drinks for kid’s parties, sweet 16s, quinceañeras, bat mitzvahs, bar mitzvahs, and family oriented events.

What We’re Known For:
Providing talented, beautiful bartenders who exemplify excellent customer service. Our bartenders are well put together, well-spoken, and friendly. They also have an incredible work ethic. This is also what sets us apart from others:

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Although the craft cocktail movement has peaked in terms of innovation, the bar has now been permanently raised when it comes to people’s palates and expectations. People will no longer tolerate inferior spirits, artificial mixers, or lazy drinks. Whether it’s an intimate dinner party or a giant corporate event, people want great drinks and exceptional customer service. This isn’t going to change. People want the best experience possible for their friends, family, and colleagues, and when it comes to cocktails, we are here to make sure it happens.

These two women are inspiring, and I love the fact that they’ve steadily grown their business and have designed and written three books. I want to see more of their work!
