Meet Jonathan Sherer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Sherer.

Hi Jonathan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story? 
Music has been integrated into every aspect of my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve toured, written, and produced songs for the likes of more established acts, such as InVogue Records’ Hotel Books and September Stories, as well as numerous small projects. 

A few years ago, I began a solo venture releasing music under the moniker SØNØS (Now known as “MEZMER”). I started with a couple of singles, my debut EP “THE SPACE.” and continued releasing consistently over the following years. 

Bio: ”SØNØS is a sonic manifestation of what lies beyond. A mind-altering ambient R&B experience for people who live in the clouds. SØNØS was founded in late 2018 by Hotel Books & ambient/RnB guitarist Jonathan Sherer as a solo project. A cultured performer, songwriter, and producer—after acting as the songwriter and catalyst behind a number of projects, Jonathan began releasing/producing music under the moniker “SØNØS” in Winter 2018. Casting a wide stylistic net, SØNØS incorporates elements surpassing pop, RnB, jazz, and indie, amongst many others. A unique passageway to what lies beyond the hills and the mountains and the earth.” 

Formerly known as “SØNØS” (2018-2022), MEZMER was created as a continuation of the solo career of Jonathan Sherer. While SØNØS’ sound was defined by more hybrid/electronic-leaning sonic landscapes, MESMER has set itself apart through its utilization of earth-shattering, raw instrumentation, further punctuated by epic explosions of ambient melancholia. 

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of the greatest struggles encountered along the way are the tumultuous and ever-evolving nature of the music industry. In a world that is seemingly in a subconscious race toward omnipresent obsoletion, it can be difficult to find a long-term home for your art. 

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Since birth, I have been an artist in every sense of the word, from physical media to digital design to music and beyond. 

Some of the most notable cornerstones for my career include my time writing and performing as the guitarist in Hotel Books, performing in every continental state in the US aside from Florida, and further continuing my music career as SØNØS/MEZMER. Along with self-producing a number of releases and collaborating with many artists over the years. 

Another milestone for me was launching my graphic design studio, “Have Time, Be Empty.” In the design landscape, I have collaborated with artists such as JXDN, Felly, cøzybøy, Haiden Henderson, NERIAH, and companies such as SHEIN & Republic Records.
