Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Childress.
Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always had a love for music. I grew up in a musical family, so some of my earliest memories are of my mom, dad, sister and me singing around the piano; listening to classical music and listening to my dad sing at church. I didn’t decide to seriously pursue a music career until much later.
Right after college, I began a career in public affairs and PR, and I thought that was my path. Eventually, I got to a point where I knew I’d regret it if I never even seriously attempted music, so I quit my job to pursue this big dream.
The first major opportunity I got was as a contestant on Season 4 of The Voice on Team Usher. That really propelled me forward because it was such a big thing. It made me feel like maybe my big dream was possible.
After that, I started playing shows in LA, and my world just exploded. I’ve done some amazing things. I’ve played festivals like SXSW and BottleRock festival in Napa Valley, opened for major artists like Patti LaBelle, Allen Stone, The Family Stone, Gavin DeGraw and Fitz, and the Tantrums.
I released my debut album “Days” in February 2018 which was a huge milestone for me. The album itself marks the major milestones in my life today — all the important “days” of my life.
Creating that and then sharing it with the world and the positive feedback I’ve received has been one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had in this career.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest struggle for an artist is how to manage the insecurity and self-doubt that goes with putting your heart out there for the world to see. I think learning how to trust your inner voice helps make everything else so much easier, and that’s a never-ending process.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I think what sets me apart is my energy and my point of view.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
The summer afternoons with my mom, playing dominos on the kitchen floor.
