Meet Jess Faye Medina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Faye Medina.

Hi Jess Faye, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all began my last semester of college. I had a few extra classes I could take before I graduated and a friend of mine highly recommended I take ceramics. I didn’t really have much experience with clay and thought why not. Once we started, I was hooked. I would go to studio hours any chance I could get. Even when I didn’t have classes, I would commute 45 minutes to get my hands dirty. By the end of the semester, I was able to throw (molding clay on a wheel) multiple even pots and handbuild hundreds of pounds worth of clay. Once I graduated, I didn’t have a chance to work with clay for a long time. A few years later, around the end of 2020, I couldn’t take it anymore and decided to join a shared community studio. Since then, I’ve been going regularly, throwing as much as my hands can handle.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not a very smooth road because like many other creative endeavors not only is working with ceramics time sensitively difficult and hard to master but it’s also really expensive. If you put into account the wheel, kiln, glazes, tools, other equipment, and etc., it can go well over $10K.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in functional ceramic stoneware. I like to make things people use. There’s a certain warm and magical feeling I get when I use something I’ve made and to hear other people feel the same way makes me so happy. What sets me apart from others is kind of everything. Every ceramicist has their own way of making handles, carving bottoms, choices of glaze, etc.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I learned to just go for it. Who knows if anyone will like what you make as long as you do, so go for it. See where it takes you!
